Legal advice

Long story short, I and a couple friends were released from a performance job recently when it was cancelled and we are supposed to get two weeks pay as a buyout. The first week was due last wed, and the second was supposed to be in our accounts today. Neither payment is there. All of us have e-mailed the producer last week notifying him we didn't have the money yet, and he has yet to respond to any of us. Getting money on time was an issue the entire run of the show, so this comes as no surprise. I have contracts that say he owes us the money. How soon should we write a letter threatening to sue? Does this letter need to be reviewed by a lawyer? How much in legal fees would this sort of thing cost?
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

re: Legal advice

before getting a lawyer, I would call the local Department Of Labor and file a complaint.
