I just finished the run of my show, which I co-wrote and co-performed. It was all right... but at this point I hate it and I'm sure I could do much much better. Here are some of the things I learned... if we all add them, maybe others trying to put on their own shows can avoid some of our mistakes.
1. Having a rehearsal schedule helps a lot
2. If possible (and according to your show), in a limited budget situation, try to find an alternative performing space where you might not have to pay rent or for technicians.
3. There is no such thing as too much advertising.
4. Start working the show with your techs at least a week before opening.
5. Here's something I did right - make lists. Lots of them. Months before opening, I had prop, costume, & set lists. I also worked out a sound, light, & set plot way before we needed them. It may seem obvious to some people... but knowing exactly what you need and when is indespensible.
Oh well. Those are my biggest ones. Looking at them, they're VERY OBVIOUS. Please don't tell me that they're obvious. I'm stewing in my own failed show at the moment & am aware of my mistakes.

Fabala - There is plenty of time to second guess and critique...first - WOW, you pulled off something that very few people ever accomplish. CONGRATULATIONS!
