Stephanie Zacharek gives a balls-out rave in Salon.com and drops this pearl:
"Special effects have so radically taken over the content of mainstream movies -- particularly summer blockbusters -- that they've reached the point of being nothing special at all. We're still seeing more action movies that use special effects to beat the audience into a state of something resembling awe (as "The Incredible Hulk" did) than ones that put the focus on live performers, using special effects judiciously and with some sense of how they need to serve a story and its characters (à la "Iron Man").
But Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" is something else again: It's too wildly fanciful, too witty, too operatic in its vision, to fit comfortably into any of the convenient folders we might use to keep our mainstream entertainments sorted in our minds. I left the theater so enraptured, so energized, that it didn't immediately register that I'd just seen a "special-effects" movie, although, of course, I had."

Posted: 7/11/08 at 10:22ami've been hard ever since i saw that they were making hellboy 2. i never read the comics and only vaguely knew anything about hellboy until i saw the first movie. but i fell head over heels in love with the movie and own the special edition. god what fun it is and what a good heart it has. i'm so happy they have done another one and can't wait to see it. i was really happy to see iron man. the hulk i could care less about and dark knight leaves me meh. but red and liz and abe...them i love. them i want to see on a big screen the way they were intended to be seen. thanks, guillermo.

Posted: 7/11/08 at 10:30amThe only Del Toro film I've seen is PAN'S LABYRINTH, which I really hated, except for Sergi Lopez and Maribel Verdu. Are his other films worth seeing?

His films are good--you'll prob hate them, Roscoe.
I can't wait until tonite! My bf hadn't seen the first one, so we watched it last night.
And how fitting for borstal to start this thread! If Red were gay, he would be the ultimate brick pig!

Uh, okay.
So, to everybody but jerby, are Del Toro's films worth exploring further, to someone who really disliked PAN'S LABYRINTH?
