It sucks being broke when you have to ask to borrow money from other people. I just got a summer job, which my parents have been on my case about since I got back from school 2 weeks ago, but I haven't started working yet and therefore have no money. As if I didn't already owe my parents enough money already, my cell phone bill is due a week from tomorrow and I have to ask them to pay it for me.
It was much worse a few months ago at school. Even though I had housing and food taken care of (with student loans, which I will be paying back until the day I retire), I was considering cashing in the mutual funds I've had since I was born just so I could buy toothpaste and facewash at CVS.

Posted: 5/27/05 at 12:11amI work hard for 2-3 months and then I coast for a couple of months. I've got a really flexible job with my own hours. I'm never paycheck to paycheck but If I lost my job , I'd have two maybe three months tops before being totally broke.

Look on the bright side. Being broke often enough means you won't be a schmuck with money--when you eventually get some. I am finally comfortable/middle class, but I still won't pay more than $14 for an entree. I only buy generic aspirin. I refuse to get cable and pay $50/month for MORE crappy televison. And i don't spend more than $100 for sex (TMI?)
These are valuable lessons.

Posted: 5/27/05 at 2:43amMy grandmother used to say "We learn how to spend from the poor, and we learn how to save from the rich." That made more sense to me as a child than it does now. Rich people spend tons of money, they just have plenty more where that came from.

I know I'm not overall broke, as I am fortunate enough to live with my parents, and I have all these things covered -- I just am broke in terms of my checking account, as in "I can't buy a new [please insert unecessary object here]">
However, I'm glad my parents taught me some responsibility, and I am now saving a good bit of my money that I earn in order to have money in the future so that when I become "broke" I can still afford rent.

My health scares me because I take a lot of medications and I can't afford them. They are keeping me alive. I fear of how will I pay my rent, my utilities, and other things. I am on Social Security Disability. While do they call it Security? I certainly don't feel very secure. I must rely on state agencies just to get by.and I mean barely get by. Tonight's dinner is a bagel and a boiled egg. Thebills are mounting. My health is poor. My family doesn't know I exist with these problems. When will it end?
Reading this literally broke my heart today. I'm so sorry Yenta. I wish you weren't going through this.

Yes, indeed. So I went home last night and looked through my cupboards....Here is a complete list of ALL the food in my apartment.:)
1 package knock-off brand poptarts (Strawberry, for those who care)
3 packages Ramen.
1/2 gallon milk
1 orange (probably REALLY old. I don't remember buying it)
Almost empty can of Raisins
1 box knock-off mac and cheese
2 cans tuna
TONS of teabags and coffee (Hey, even a poor girl needs her caffiene fix!)
1 bag frozen Santa Fe vegetables
yep, thats about it:)
