I recently recieved the role of Seymour in my High School's production of "Little Shop of Horrors" and I have a big concern. Now, I am THRILLED that I got the part, I really worked hard to get it. But, there is one prob, even though I know the director has faith in me to handle the music/acting aspects, I am overweight. I'm not gonna like, i am porky lol (not like sickly porky but you know :) I thought I was gonna loose out to a kid named Dan who is sorta lanky and wears glasses, but I got the role, and after we found out, this girl in the cast came up to me and said "Dan should of gotten the role. Even though you killed at auditions, he is thin. Your fat. Seymour isnt fat. It doenst work" and walked away. It really hurt me, and it sorta made me doubt my abilities to play the role. Whats your guys opinion, can a "bigger" kid play the role ?

Hey there. Just letting you know. I'm 20 years old, overweight, and have played the role of Seymour twice. Ignorance gets people no where and I am sure you will be fantastic. Break a leg man! Go in, have fun, and honestly, put the rude comments behind you. The director cast you because they saw something. I'm sure you're Seymour will be adorable.
Of course you can! Use that dumb girl's dumber comment to help you find Seymour's core; that somehow he's not good enough, not attractive enough, to win the girl he loves. That's what makes the character something better than a cartoon, you know? Because everyone has felt like Seymour, so his moral dilemma has some emotional meaning. Even tho the show is a hoot. Go get 'em, Seymour! You got the part because you're going to be great in it.
Seymour (a role I've enjoyed), works well with anyone as long as you're lovable. In fact, skinny guys sometimes don't do the part the warm justice it deserves, and I meant that in the best possible way.
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

Just do what you do best, and prove that b**** wrong with your talent on opening night.
the same thing happened to me in high school, when I got a lead. I got called out by this crazy b**** who made all these dumb proclamations and tried to tear me down.
I def. agree with lovingit. let that comment allow you to find Seymour's core. It will fuel your performance, and make it even better.
"I'm an American, Damnit!!! And if it's three things I don't believe in, it's quitting and math."
I've played Seymour, and I'm a little bulkier than most Seymours of the past. But there's nothing about being a nerdy florist on skid row that says you have to be skinny.
lol thans guys. She didnt get a "lead' but a main part, as Cheffone (sp) one of the 3 Ronnett girls who sing the sorta "backup" songs. I think its cool to have a heavier Seymour cuz then the contrast to Audrey, who is tall, curvey, and drop dead hot, is just hysterical lol and the girl who got the part of Audrey is amazing and looks alot like Kerry Buttler (well not really, but has that same sorta body type)
