Cheney's Daughter Joins Romney Camp

MIAMI (AP) — Liz Cheney, one of Vice President Dick Cheney's daughters, has signed onto Mitt Romney's presidential campaign as a senior foreign policy adviser.

Cheney most recently worked in the State Department handling Middle East affairs.

While her father and President Bush have both vowed to remain neutral as their fellow Republicans battle it out for the GOP nomination, the endorsement is likely to be well received among conservatives who comprise a critical primary voting bloc in both Florida, which votes Tuesday, and the 20-odd states voting Feb. 5.

Romney has also enjoyed the support of aides with ties to the Bush family, including top assistants to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former President George H.W. Bush.

Liz Cheney, 41, is the elder of Dick and Lynne Cheney's two daughters. Her younger sister, Mary, has been more prominently in the public eye after revealing she is a lesbian and having a son last year with her partner, Heather Poe, despite the administration's opposition to gay marriage.

Liz Cheney, the mother of five children, said in a statement: "Throughout his campaign, (Romney) has distinguished himself as a leader who can guide our country with a clear vision for overcoming the threats we face today. ... I look forward to working with Governor Romney because he is the leader our country needs."

Romney said Liz Cheney brings the campaign "years of experience helping to formulate America's foreign policy and to advance democracy and reform in the Middle East."

Liz Cheney previously supported former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who dropped out of the race last week.

i was just going to ask why the Republicans didn't like Romney. With his business experience you'd think they'd be all over him, but this is the first major endorsement he's received. It's been as if they're afraid of him.

Abortion: 1994 he was Pro-choice and said he agreed with Roe vs. Wade. 2008 he is 100% Pro-life and wants Roe overturned.

Taxation: As Governor in 2003 he raised the gas tax and the state income tax and increased fees on Driver's licenses, pet licenses, marriage licenses and gun licenses. In 2008, Mitt is in favor of lower taxes and has signed a pledge to oppose any increases.

Gun control: 1994, Mitt is strongly in favor of gun control, campaigns for an assault-rifle ban and is strongly in favor of the Brady Bill. 2007, he attended the NRA convention and has said the second amendment bans any gun control.

Gays: It's almost impossible to track his position on Gay rights- he campaigned in favor of hate crime legislation and civil unions, but has also spoken out strongly against gay marriage and lobbied for a constitutional amendment banning it. Similarly, he's been simultaneously against torture and in favor of "Enhanced Interrogation techniques (A/K/A Torture)."

He was once dubbed "The most intellectually dishonest human being in the history of politics." And THAT is saying something.

He presents as reasonable, intelligent, active, and effective while the others do nothing more than chirp the partisan party dogma. He is a moderate, much like his father, and in these times when so many have grown weary of the constant negativity and extreme and divisive party politics that lead to nothing but stagnation or decline, he is a breath of fresh air.

He's Moderate? Because sometimes he's liberal and sometimes he's conservative? Imagine a commercial with Romney saying "I'm more pro-gay rights than Ted Kennedy". How would that play? You could make a dozen commercials like that. He literally has not held one single position consistently on any issue. I think you can explain an "evolution" on an issue or two but he hasn't stayed the same on anything.

No, moderates do not stick to extreme positions. Moderates find the middle ground. Is it ok to ban assault weapons while allowing handguns and long guns? Yes, it is - that's a moderate position that allows citizens the right to bear arms.
