It was actually a pretty big hit on the charts at the time it came out -- especially for Sondheim song sung by Liza. I think it hit the top 40 and popped up in dance clubs around the country. And Liza looked phenomenal then -- so thin and together.

It IS very 80's because it was released in the late 80's/early 90's.

I've heard it and performed it to death.

You should see the video with Liza wearing a Rosie O'D / lesbian / butch / dyke haircut... It's a hoot with her in the tub with all of the instamatic photos floating around....

I have a recording of this from the 80s. It was very big for awhile.

Oh, I LOVE PSB. Saw them on the last tour. They are SO great.

At the time, I loved the Liza album, but it sure doesn't hold up, does it?

She did a TV special around that time and it ended with her talking about the PSB album and saying "People seem to really like it!" But that was just the gays. It didn't sell well.

Yeah, I just double-checked. It didn't hit the top 40, but it spent a while on the dance charts.

I met the PSB at a Pride festival one year...I was dressed as LIza and they wouldn't leave me alone.

I still have a piece of jewelry one of them gave me.

She even looked great in the mid-90's concert for Sondheim at Carnegie Hall. Her image now works wonderfully for her stints on Arrested Development, but she's a mess.

Dame, have you seen anything about the remastered version being released domestically? The import version is already available (kind of pricey, though)...has several extended versions and a bonus DVD.

This was the first CD I ever owned...my mother bought it for me for Christmas a few years before I came out to her (Liza and the Pet Shop Boys...mothers always know).

For another 80's classic, you should listen to Taco's version of "Puttin' on the Ritz"

I just bought it off of iTunes.

Why have I never heard this before?!?

Because you weren't born when it came out.

What a great song! And if you think THIS is campy- Is everyone aware of the disco version of the "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" released by RCA in the late 70's? It was a great (and very long) 12" remix using snatches of the cast album re-set to a throbbing disco beat. It was on the Sondheim box set that had a grey metallic cover-- it's out of print now but someone must have it!

re: Liza and The Pet Shop Boys take on Sondheim!

Um...I have it. SOMEWHERE.

But let's all pause to remember the one version of "Losing My Mind" in which the singer actually LOST her mind: Dorothy Loudon.

re: Liza and The Pet Shop Boys take on Sondheim!

Sigh.
I still think Loudon's rendetion is the best.

And, yeah, I have the gray box set you're talking about.
Disco Sweeney is....different.

re: Liza and The Pet Shop Boys take on Sondheim!

I don't have the box set, but I've heard Disco Sweeney.

When I bought Liza's Losing My Mind a few minutes ago, I came across Loudon's fantastic version of the song(I have the DVD, but not the cd). I bought it immediately, and I'm sure it will be played MANY many times.

When I saw Liza do that song on tour, the smoke machine got out of control and totally filled the stage and spilled into the audience. I couldn't see the person next to me, much less Liza Mae.
