London or NYC, my quandry.....

We were planning on NYC for Thanksgiving, as this will be the first Thanksgiving after his mom passed away, and we wanted to be there for his sister, and his mothers 92yr old cousin.
Well...the cousin doesn't care if we come, and his sister won't commit to even being in the city.....

So, for about the same price we can fly from here to London, or NYC...literally within a few dollars.

SO....where do we go. We can see shows at either place.....weather should be about the same.

Unsure what to do.....haven't been to London (or England for that matter) since 1975.

Discuss!

re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

I think the theatre in London right now is far superior to what's playing in NYC - and talk about a change of scenery!

re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

London in a heartbeat but I go to NYC (the best city in the world) several times a year.

Mary Poppins and Company will be on Bway if you go at Thanksgiving Elphaha. Too bad Sweeney is closing before your trip.

Not since '75? Go! I second DG. There is so much on there right now. And so what if the dollar is lousy? The prices in London are not as high as those in NYC! Seriously.
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

NYC!

It is Thanksgiving. You will get a nice turkey dinner here with chestnut stuffing. I can recommend a diner that gives a great meal with chestnut stuffing and great turkey if you do not have to have it too gourmet.

You can see Grey Gardens, Mary Poppins and the new Chorus Line!

Plus you will be on the verge of Christmas and you may catch the early Christmas decorations--no town does it up like ths one for Christmas. It'll be more rainy in London.

And for shopping you can't beat NYC.

Though Covent Garden and various other places give it a good run for its money...

PalJoey made the point I was going to make. The actual travel expenses may be the same, but you'll end up spending a lot more, plus you can get more out of your trip in NY by the shorter travel times.

If that added expense doesn't mean that much, that I might lean towards London.

I also assume that my being in NY will have no impact on your decision? re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

Don't forget new shows will be open in NY at that time: High Fidelity, Spring Awakening, A Chorus Line, Company etc...

Not to mention...Les Mis.

re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

Glebb, fortunately I got to see Sweeney, 8th row in March.
Joey when did the pound get better? in June and July it sucked....

Nom, I forgot about Grey Gardens......I def want to see Le Mis, and it's playing in both cities.....

good ideas everyone, thanks.

This would be a total surprise, so he'll never know London was considered......

bdway, probably not....we're just still in the European bubble from our recent trip, so he may prefer that......I am not sure he'd like the arrive Friday, come home Tuesday deal......

Patronus, believe it or not I HAD thought about that fact, ie you being there, and everyone else who lives there....decisions, decisions........the extra cost doesn't bother me.

Amusing that two people living in Southern California have to fly to NYC over a holiday weekend to meet up. :)

Honestly, the longer flight time with the shorter stay, coupled with the magic on NY at Thanksgiving would make me lean towards NY.

Start spreading the news,
I'm leaving today.
I want to be a part of it -
New York, New York.

These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
And step around the heart of it
New York, New York.

I want to wake up in a city,
That doesn't sleep,
To find I'm king of the hill- ah-
Top of the heap.

My little town blues
Are melting away
I'm gonna make a brand new start of it
In old New York.
If I can make it there,
I'd make it anywhere
It's up to you,
New York, New York.

New York, New York!

I want to wake up in a city,
That doesn't sleep,
To find I'm king of the hill,
Head of the list,
Cream of the crop
At top of the heap.

My little town blues
Are melting away
I'm gonna make a brand new start of it
In old New York.
If I can make it there,
I'd make it anywhere
Come on, come through,
New York, New York: - )
Life is...just a bowl of cherries...

re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

Well, I love both cities, though New York has a clear lead in my heart. I've been to both in Christmas time, they are both wonderful, but trust me, I've never been so COLD as I've been to London during that time !! The New York winter felt like a summer breeze, compared to that !

re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

well Greek, the pricr for London went up twice since 2 days ago...so probably not even an option, and I think for this trip we'd have more fun in NYC.
he cold would not bother me.....I've lived in Chicago and Detroit, and once you've dealt with -68F with the windchill.....nothing bothers you.

re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

yeah, NYC should be fun
it is rather pricy in London, and I actually prefer Broadway theatre as to that of the West End
that may just be me though

but there are plenty of fun things and good shows to see at Thanksgiving, such as GREY GARDENS, COMPANY, MARY POPPINS, SPRING AWAKENING...and all the other shows on Broadway right now

have fun! and im sorry about your mom, elphaba, that must be hard

re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

well, London got too expensive, and as Steve's sister STILL won't commit to anything for Thanksgiving, we're going to fly up to my parents place in Puget Sound (and my sister is flying up)for 5 days, and also drive up to Vancouver for a day....

Not NYC, but it'll have to do.....

Oh, that's really too bad that neither plan worked out.

I was thinking BWW at the Parade day. :)

re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

Well, Alshlee Simpson will both be in London. That alone should be reason enough to choose it. :P
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

JerseyGirl, that's EXACTLY what I was going to post on this thread. re: London or NYC, my quandry.....

Despite that very important pro for London, though, I would go with NYC. Broadway will be full of new shows that seem to be making it into a great season that you won't want to miss.
