There was a production of Sherlock Holmes where Frank Langella played Holmes. I saw this on cable a few years ago and was curious if anyone knew the name or if it or if it is available on DVD. I believe it was a stage production taped for television. Thanks!

IMDB is your friend:

It does not appear to be on videocasette or DVD.

I think I still have it on VHS (recorded from cable) somewhere.

Langella was wonderful! And a very young Christian Slater is his young helper, Billy.

I also still have my taped-from-cable VHS copy. It's worth it for his opium scene alone, but the whole production is pretty fun to watch.

I have it too. I'm going to have to get it out and watch it again. It's been a while.

Oh, GOD! I haven't thought about that one in the twenty-plus years since I saw it.

Remember "in the day," when HBO would either mount stage productions of plays or film revivals of them. This was one of them and they did "Wait Until Dark" with Katherine Ross and Stacy Keach.

If I'm not mistaken, this was the William Gilette turn of the Century version of "Sherlock Holmes" and this production was "inspired" by the Royal Shakespeare Festival revival of it in the mid/late 1970s.

It certainly is the Gillette. I believe this particular production is from Williamstown. But yes, I imagine the RSC gets credit for excavating it in the first place.

Right, this is the one where he shoots up cocaine onstage. Fun times. I remember being so distraught as a child that my favorite fictional character was a junkie.

I remember being shocked at hearing Basil Rathbone say "Watson, the needle!"
