Love Letters from Maureen O'Hara

Does anyone here have this? Is it worth picking up?

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I have it. It's great - but then again I'm biased because I've loved Maureen O'Hara ever since I was five years old. I think you'll enjoy it - have you ever heard her singing, like in THE PARENT TRAP? She has a lovely soprano.

Good GOD, that woman was amazing-looking.

Yes, she sang. Not badly at all, either.

And she was DEVASTATED when Fox passed her over for a dubbed Deborah Kerr as Anna in "The King and I." She wanted that role badly.

Apparently, her screen test proved that she was "too overpowering" for Anna, and even for Yul.

You had to be a "John Wayne" to be a match for Maureen.

She is absolutely one of the most stunning women ever. I watched The Quiet Man last week. That's one of my all time favorites. She would have been fantastic in The King and I.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

She was on TCM today in "McLintock!"

...with John Wayne.

...AND Yvonne De Carlo.

Stunning is exactly it. Breathtakingly beautiful (still is!).

Appreantly, Rogers said that "No Pirate Queen is going to play my Anna!" and wouldn't even agree to listen to her tapes. She was indeed devastated.

O'Hara and Wayne are favorite movie pairing EVER.I love, love love them together, particularly in THE QUIET MAN. In fact, that movie influenced me so much that I got a clover tattoo in honor of it.

Whenever she let that "Irish temper" flair, you'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful woman EVER.

It was her stock in trade. She was never more gorgeous than when she was pissed off!

And no one could make her blood boil (on film) better than Wayne.

True, Best. Even though I did really enjoy her chemistry with the late Brian Keith, both in THE PARENT TRAP (the first movie I ever saw and my favorite to this day) and THE DEADLY COMPANIONS (which has been sadly forgotten) - Wayne was the best partner she ever had, and she his.

I've only heard her voice in The Parent Trap and in some clips from the Christine cast recording. I was impressed. Thanks for your thoughts on the album, BwayLover.

Here's part of a Larry King interview where she talks about what happened with The King and I:

O'HARA: And the other terrible disappointment in my life was Darryl Zanuck cast me in "Anna and the King of Siam" because I sing -- or I did sing and Lou Shriber was second-in-command at 20th Century Fox and Lou called me and said, Maureen I'm going into New York with your recordings to tie up the deal. Wish me luck because I have to see Rogers and Hammerstein. He went into New York. He saw Rogers and Hammerstein and he said Darryl Zanuck wants her to play Anna and they said, what, a pirate queen play our Anna? Never. And I didn't get to do it.

KING: "The King and I."

O'HARA: "The King and I," but years later I told them how I would have played it and they asked me, would I do it on Broadway in a revival and I said, you turned me down once. You don't get a second chance.

KING: You're tough.

O'HARA: That's me. No. I've got integrity.

KING: Why didn't you sing more in movies. You never got musicals, right?

O'HARA: No.

This audio interview with Maureen is terrific. She talks about starting out in Hollywood, getting punched punched in the face by John Ford, breaking her wrist on the set of The Quiet Man, etc.

How is Yul Brynner not "John Wayne" enough for Maureen O'Hara?

He was "John Wayne" enough for Judy Garland.

We saw a documentary on the real Anna Leonowens, and based on the reality, Ms. O'Hara would have been closer to the truth. Anna was a pretty incredible woman - VERY 'strong', as it were. She had to be to have accomplished what she did in that time period.

I LOVE the movie of THE KING AND I, but I can truly envision Maureen in the role.

Last time I saw Maurren O'Hara was a year or two ago when she was photographed in the St.Patrick's Day Parade. She must have been about 85 or 86 and looked incredible. I mean, she looked like a million bucks.

re: Love Letters from Maureen O'Hara

I can't play tennis,
My golf's a menace,
I just can't do the Australian crawl.
And I'm no better at volleyball
Ain't there anyone here for love, sweet love,
Ain't there anyone here for love?

I'm apathetic,
and non-athletic,
Can't keep up in a marathon.
I need some shoulder to lean upon
And a couple of arms to hold me
Ain't there anyone here for love?

I'm not in condition to wrestle,
I've never trained in a gym.
Show me a man who can nestle
And I'll pin a medal on him.

Need some chappy
To make me happy
And he don't need to be Hercules.
Don't anyone know about birds and bees
Ain't there anyone here for love, sweet love,
Ain't there anyone here for love?
