I'm watching "I Married Joan" from Netflix. Joan Davis has all the same bag of tricks as Lucille Ball (mugging, physical comedy) but the show is not as funny as ILL and hasn't enjoyed the popularity that ILL enjoys today.
Is it that the writing was not as good? Also, I think the supporting players aren't as strong. Nobody can beat Ethel & Fred Mertz.

I loved Joan Davis, and I Married Joan. Eve Arden in Our Miss Brooks as well.
Their shows were delightful to be sure, and I remember them with great affection.
But there is only one Lucy. And I Love Lucy is iconic. All four cast members made it so.
Let us ot forget Gale Storm in The Gale Storm Show or My Little Margie.

Yes, she was wonderful, too.
I always got a laugh out of the crusty, blustery character actors on these shows, like Gale Gordon on Our Miss Brooks or Clarence Kolb as Mr. Honeywell on My Little Margie.
