The hoopla of CRASH winning Best Picture compelled me to rewatch Paul Thomas Anderson's magnum opus about the human condition. While it is unfair to compare the two simply because they resemble each other structurally (CRASH is more about social issues whereas MAGNOLIA is concerned about spiritual ones), I simply must shake my head at the very little Oscar love that was tossed Magnolia's way. Tom Cruise really did give the Best Supporting performance that year (And I can't believe I just said that.) and completely deserved to win. Deserved to win. Deserved to win.
I choose to believe that Julianne Moore made him look better than he actually was. JK.
Every time I watch it, I like it more and more.
"I don't even know no loud crash!"

One of my favorite films of ALL TIME!
I still haven't seen this! I think I'm going to get from the video store this week.

Tom Cruise deserved his nominations for Born On The Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire.
I saw Magnolia but I really don't remember any of it.

I know I said it was somewhat wrong to compare Crash and Magnolia but I'll just come right out and blurt the subtext out for everyone:
MAGNOLIA COMPLETELY S***S ALL OVER CRASH'S AUDIENCE-PANDERING MUG!!!!
I love both. SCHMEH!
Tom Cruise's best performance ever perhaps.
MAGNOLIA COMPLETELY S***S ALL OVER CRASH'S AUDIENCE-PANDERING MUG!!!!
Well in that case I may have to run to the video store right now.
But, but, but Cruel, Magnolia makes people THINK! Who wants THAT???

At least it doesn't FORCE you to think like Crash does, as if waving its vagina around in the wind and screaming "THIS IS THOUGHT PROVOKING! WE'RE BEING IMPORTANT!" makes for the Best Picture of the year. (This is why I chose SYRIANA as my Best film of the year)
I thought JesusUnlimited said it was 'Rent' that waved its vagina in the wind, no?
I'm sorry but I thought this was a Magnolia thread--not yet another bitter "Crash sux!!" thread.
"And you! You call me "lady"??? HOW DARE YOU?? Suck! My! ****!"

Now now now. Let's not get into a discussion of who waved whose vagina in what...
No, no - I'm encouraging more Crash and BBM threads. I've got a bet to settle. I'm predicting we'll hit 74. (sp78 went a bit more conservative at 47.)

Man it's fascinating to watch Magnolia and see how much Phillip Seymour Hoffman does with such a small part. In a lesser actor's hands, Phil Parma would have just been a script marker.
I love the movie but was never amazed with Cruise's contribution. He was passable but didn't dig in with the same depth as his co-stars. He took a potentially interesting character and did what he always does -- takes the most obvious and pointed road toward getting noticed.
To me, that movie was all about John C. Reilly.

Tom Cruise sucked in Magnolia just like the rest of his movies. I chose to ignore his screen moments during Magnolia.
MAGNOLIA is one of my 10 or 20 most favorite films. It's a brilliant film with brilliant performances. Vastly underrated! I own it and watch it (or parts of it) often. And unlike a certain recent Oscar winner, it doesn't find it necessary to continuously hit you over the head with its message as a constant reminder of what an important and relevant work it is. And, by no means am I a fan of Cruise, but I have to give him props for his performance in this film.

I saw Magnolia once - during a preview screening before the film was actually released. So I went in COLD! I remember thinking it was a bizarre movie (what with the frogs and all), but I found myself talking about for days afterward. The acting in Magnolia is superb and Amy Mann's music has always been a favorite.
I think I might like to see it again. If I recall, it's very long!
And I remember when I saw a recent Oscar winner film, I thought "Wow, this is just like Magnolia and Traffic wrapped up together." But I did very much like the recent Oscar winner film as well.

I think certain haters of a certain recent Oscar winner are hitting their point WAY harder than a certain recent Oscar winner supposedly does.

As a movie, I actually like a certain Oscar winner more than I liked Magnolia.
Magnolia is easily one of my top 10 movies.
I think it's wonderful.
I agree that Tom Cruise was phenominal and should have won the Oscar that year.
I may have to watch it one night this week as it's been too long.
