#1Mac help: csv.txt. files?
Posted: 1/7/09 at 9:26am

I'm trying to backup my LiveJournal using the export tool on LJ, and it saves the files with the extension "csv.txt." My computer automatically opens it with Graphics Converter, but the text is completely unintelligible, and I get a message telling me the file is either broken, the format is unknown, or it isn't a graphic, so the program cannot open it. I am able to open it in Word, but some of the text is distorted.

Can someone tell me what I should be using to open this file, or what to do to make it readable? Thanks.

(Or, alternatively, does anyone know of an LJ archive tool that's Mac compatible? The only one I've found so far has had a "too many users currently using the service" message since last night.

Have you tried textedit?

I don't have that. Is it something I can download?

Look in your applications folder and texedit should be there. It comes installed on your mac. Download the file, single click on the file and get info (command-i) go down to open with and choose texedit. You should then be able to double click on the file and it will open with texedit.

I definitely don't have it. I looked through my Applications folder manually and did a Spotlight search. :/

I just called Apple, and there's apparently no way to get the program and install it separately, because it's a default on the OS. So the only way I can GET it is to reinstall my entire operating system, which is ridiculous.

What version of the OS are you using?

You might have SimpleText if it's an earlier OS.

X 10.4.11

I don't have SimpleText either. How weird.

I would go to the closest Apple support place. It's not the end of the world, but TextEdit is one of those programs you really should have.

You can download a trial version of Text-Edit Plus and see if that works for you. It's shareware so if you plan to keep it, it will cost you a few bucks.

I just sent the file to a friend and had her open it with TextEdit. She sent me a screencap, and it looks exactly the same as it did when I opened it with word. So it's there and it's legible, but some of the text in the headers and footers got distorted. I guess that's not the end of the world if it's the best I can do, though, since I'm just losing like... the entry titles and current mood tags.

I've been needing to take my computer to the Apple store for some other minor issues, so I'll ask them about this when I go. I asked the guy on the phone if I could take it to the Genius Bar and have them do it, and he insisted I couldn't, but I have a really hard time believing that.
