I'm watching Season 6 of Mad Men. Megan is in NYC talking on the phone to Don in California. They are both acting like fiber optics are the norm. Does anyone remember what long distance phone calls were like in the 1960s? It was like talking over a tornado.

We had a party line until the early 70s. I imagine the Drapers had enough money to have a private line. But I remember having to talk really loud to my grandmother because long distance calls had a lot of static.

YES! "What?!" "Say that again please??." "I CAN't HEAR YOU!" was usually how long distance phone calls went back then.

You're aware you're watching TV and not a documentary. Would you really enjoy the show more if you sat during the "real" scenes? Probably not. You'd probably bitch and moan about how annoying it was to sit through...
