What are the gun laws in D.C.? Are none allowed at all?
Man arrested with shotgun near U.S. Capitol
I moved to DC a week ago and literally 20 minutes ago JUST walked by this incident happening. Crazy! There is still traffic and tons of news cameras around the area.
First of all, jessica0414 welcome to the city! :) Trust me, you won't see that stuff all the time (well...I guess it depends on where you live). What brings you here?
Second...I work near the White House (which is in NW) but I heard crazy sirens today. I wonder if that's why. At one point I asked if the Executive Building was on fire again, because the day that happened...the sirens were wailing like crazy.
As for the gun laws, I believe that there is a total ban on guns in DC, which has been debated a lot in Congress (?) lately. They're trying to decide if that's a violation of the Constitution. Some people are trying to have the ban overturned.
Uh-oh. Has anyone heard from HD?
Ha! PalJoey...was he from this area or was he just one of those who talked about this kind of stuff. I only caught the last few days of him being around and the big fights that took place on the boards.
I move to DC in less than a week and will be working at/near the Capitol. Uh-oh...
thanks, luscious! :) I'm taking classes through Marquette university (it's a sort of satellite campus) and interning in a congressman's office. Our apt building is only about 4 blocks away from the capitol, so we were all like "WHOA!" lol. What do you do?
opiv- Welcome...what is going to be bringing you to the area?
Jessica- Very cool...I'm originally from the Chicago area, so I have a couple friends who ended up at Marquette. I work for a nonprofit- it's a professional association for women (although we have A LOT of male members, too) in the transportation industry. It's not really my calling but I'm learning a lot and our members are wonderful people.
How long are you here for? Have you gotten to do anything fun yet? I didn't realize before I came here that it's such a big theatre town. My Fair Lady at the Kennedy Center closes on Sunday...I'm thinking about going...
That sounds really cool! I'm here until May 2, I actually go to Loyola Chicago so I'm from around there too :) This entire week our group has been going to like every museum ever (2 or 3 a day) with our Arts in a Democratic Society class. It's been a great time! We're going to see the NSO at the Kennedy Center tonight, too, so that should be pretty fantastic.
Your job sounds cool! I hope that question wasn't too personal, but every time I see someone in a suit or hear that they work in DC I'm always very curious what they do since I'm not quite sure yet myself what kinds of career possibilities there are :)
I know there is a total ban.
Congress can't touch the ban on this one. Only because technically, DC is its own city. They can make whatever laws they want to on this topic. It just so happens that congress works there as well.
I know in NYC it is considered a crime. If your in a gang and you do anything illegal you get charged for that plus illegal possession of a weapon.
No problem...I'll answer pretty much any question. :)
Very cool that you go to Loyola. Chi-town is such a great city. :) I just came out here for a change of pace. It's great to explore your options for careers. Like I said, my job is fine, it's just not for me. I've learned that I really am not happy sitting in front of a computer 8 hours a day. My previous jobs were more hands on, so I have to figure out how to get back to that. :)
The Kennedy Center was one of my first experiences when I first moved here. I went to see Neil Simon be presented the Mark Twain Award for Humor and all these huge stars were there. It was nuts. And then I went outside and was walking back to the metro and I was standing in front of the Watergate and I could see the monuments all lit up. It was totally surreal. I got all emotional...haha. :)
Enjoy it! Let me know how it goes!
lusciouslace- I'm going to be a Congressional Page for the rest of this semester.
Opiv- That's pretty cool! Do you know what area of the city or area you'll be living in?
Watch out for Mark Foley.
On First Street at the Page Residence Hall, 3 blocks from the Capitol.
And I'll do my best, Geek.
Haha...I that was the first thing I thought...but I was trying not to go there. :)
Ha, it's normally most people's first thought. But I'm a girl, so I doubt the GOP congressmen will be interested.
Oooohhhh I wouldn't count on that
Ohh...very cool, Opiv. I'm sure it'll be a great experience. I got to have lunch at the Capitol Office Buildings and the view was phenomenal with the dome of the Capitol in the background. We had a Senate staffer come talk to us about global warming. It was pretty cool. :)
How long will you be here? Anything specific you're looking to do in your free time?
I'm there till June 7th or 8th. And I hope I actually have free time, since we go to school in the morning (in the Library of Congress!) and work until the House is done for the day. I'm excited
We should all try to get together and do something. I know there are other people from the area on the boards. That would be fun, don't ya think?
That would be fun! And, if any good shows are coming to town, that's always a possibility... :)
Sounds great. We'll have to get something together. :)
So I just heard on the news that the guy also had a samurai sword and a bag of gun powder....yikes....
Seroiusly? Do they know what he was planning on doing with it? lol who just has a samurai sword in their car?
