"Margaret Truman Daniel, 83, President Harry Truman's only child, a mystery novelist whose early efforts as a singer famously led her father to threaten an unkind critic with a punch to the nose, died on Tuesday in Chicago after a brief illness, according to a spokesman for the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum."
Perhaps she is most famous for an incident in 1950: "A Washington critic panned one of her performances, prompting the president to write a letter on White House stationery that read in part: "Some day I hope to meet you. When that happens you'll need a new nose, a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below.""

the burning question is: where were the Olsens?
I couldn't help but think of the play Souvenir, when I read that Margaret wasn't very well received when she sang at Carnegie Hall and also wrote a book called, "Sovenir".

I don't think she was that bad- I heard some recordings of her years ago and she was unremarkable.
My neighbors across the hall from are crying. This is so tragic.
What do you think will happen to her latest book? Was it finished?

Hmm Sounds Interesting Taz-
"Illinois senator Lyle Simmons arrives home from a fund-raising dinner to find his wife dead. First he calls his friend Mary Kate Olsen. Second he calls his friend, former DA Philip Rotondi. Third he calls 9-1-1.
Detective Chang has the senator at the top of the suspect list. Polly, the senator's estranged daughter, suspects a new villain in town, the ominously named "Joker" who was maimed in an accident caused by the Senator's Chemical plant. Polly takes measures into her own hands, hunting down the assassin dressed as a giant Bat...."
I remember once being introduced to her and the "fella who helps Margaret out on her books." She was lovely.

It's tragic- she was only 83. So much of life ahead. I think I'm going to go down and put a teddy bear and a candle down in front of her apartment building.

Poor thing. I loved her novels...
I can't help but think about the running gag in the musical (and film version) of "Call Me Madam."
All those phone calls between Ethel Merman and President Truman... always bringing up Margaret and her reviews. She finally gets a good one in the play. God bless musical theatre!

For anyone who has not been to Key West: US#1 is called Truman Avenue and also many of the side streets are womens first names.
At the corner of Truman and Margaret Street is the Margaret Truman Launderette.
This will always make me smile.
