Margaret Whiting was well known for many things and not so well known for others.
Among the latter was showing up at young, just-starting-out performers' cabaret acts basically because they sent her a flyer. She was that rara avis, a star who supported her industry.
Deeply missed by all.
So sad. I saw her in "Taking My Turn" with Cissy Houston and Marni Nixon. Her "In April" brought me to tears.
RIP
RIP...I had a friend who worked with her years ago and he said that she recorded "I'll Plant My Own Tree" from Valley of the Dolls"...In the movie we hear her voice. That famous scene with Susan Hayward was Miss Whitng's voice...

Capital Records had a collection by Miss Whiting that I used to sell to unsuspecting customers- what a glorious voice.
I guess it's out of print now. Pity.
I love that collection, Joe.
There's a 4-CD set available now, with 113 songs.
And a 1-CD reduction of it, which isn't as good a value.

She was a classy broad with a distinctive voice--and what a way with lyrics!

I might just have to pick up that box- it'd be a nice break from the Peggy Lee box I've been playing incessantly lately.
No one cares about sound quality any more, but those old Capitol reissues were amazing compared with other recordings of the time- you compare a 30's Cap recording with one from Decca or Columbia and it's like night-and-day. Especially if you're comparing recordings of Night and Day.
