Edit: Nevermind. I just looked her up. I never saw that show. I only know two of them from LOIS AND CLARK and KNOTS LANDING. The others are meaningless.

I think she is gay and in a bearded marriage. Her short hair has nothing to do with people thinking she is gay.Something in her demeanor or mannerisms is causing people to question her sexuality. Her character has pretty much been given a straight persona (slept with Cassidy, pregnancy scare in college, dated federal Marshall Andy, dinner plans with Michael....).After Olivia's orientation had been established and you still think she is gay because of short hair, that's Mariska giving off that vibe. Between the Mariska Hargitay Debate Club, blind items and DL, there is plenty of fodder to support gay rumors. There has been talk that there was nothing between Mariska and Peter on the set of SVU and then poof, they are married after the rumors started flying. Same with Marcia Cross. Being married and pregnant doesn't mean that one is straight. Remember Rock Hudson and lately Tom Cruise.

2) As a hetero man, I'm really glad Mariska Hargitay is not lesbian. Kinda gives me hope if you know what I mean.

3) Anyone else remember her as Dr. Greene's love interest, Cynthia, on ER? (about... damn, a long time ago)

I remember her on ER. She was really rather plain on that show. She is SO much more beautiful now. As for the gay vibe, the character gives me the vibe but not the actress herself. It's the tough demeanor plus the short hair plus the independence. Detective Benson could interrogate me.

Well, if she wants to play it straight, let her. She has gone to MAJOR lengths to do so. Again, it's more the character for me.

And no, I have never had a tryst with Ms. H. I am devoted to my girlfriend, Angelina. Of course, if Sarah and Cherry break up, I can comfort whomever needs it most. God, this board makes me gayer every day.

You're not the only one who thought that. These are couple of "blind items" about her. One from 1997 while she was on ER. There are more, the most recent one in 2005 at the Emmy's where they talk about Peter being gay.

Welcome and thanks for signing on! How's the weather in Iceland?

To answer your (and all other newbies') question(s), this is what
has transpired over the course of the last four months:

1. In the past, it was not at all uncommon for Mariska to be
photographed at various events in the company of close
female "friends". (See the folder "Gal Pals" in the photo section
for proof).

2. Four months ago, Mariska freaks when she becomes aware of the
fact that Olivia's (and by extention, her own) sexuality is a hot
topic for speculation on various gossip sites and lesbian message
boards. Various public sightings of Mariska being openly
demonstrative with other women, insider reports and blind items have
all been discussed in great detail on these sites. As a result,
Mariska makes sure she is seen and photographed with her
new "beard", Peter Hermann, at every opportunity.

3. She becomes so paranoid that she persuades the writers of SVU to
throw a line into consecutive episodes (Mercy and Pandora)
reinforcing Olivia's heterosexuality. "I had a pregnancy scare in
college" (Mercy) and Stabler said "she dates lots of men" (Pandora).
Both eps would have been filmed around the time the beard started
appearing.

4. She orchestrates an appearance on Conan to tell the world that
she's straight due to her discomfort with gossip to the contrary on
fan sites.

5. Rumours abound that she has again called TPTB at NBC into a
meeting to insist that Olivia be given a love interest next season.
Insiders have claimed that Olivia's love interest will be either
Detective David Deuthorn (played by Erik Palladino) or Attorney
Trevor Langen (played by her beard, Peter Hermann).

The reason lesbians (and sympathetic straight people) are angry with
Mariska is due to the subtle (some would say decidedly un-subtle!)
form of homophobia she is displaying. She is obviously terrified of
being linked in any way, shape or form to the gay community possibly
due to considerations of future job prospects. Her above actions
clearly attest to that. Ultimately, if there's nothing wrong with
being gay, then to deny it is to make a judgement call.

If anyone wants to flesh out this summary, be my guest and hope that

At DL, an insider posted information from the set that solified these comments (MHDC post #143) and can be seen on episodes of SVU. These aren't all lies people. Mariska appears to me to be a closeted lesbian.
