I'm obviously feeling very politically-galvanized tonight.
I had a conversation with a friend who happens to be a gay republican this evening. He spoke very passionately about Dick Cheney coming out and stating that he didn't outwardly support the Federal Marriage Amendment because of his daughter's sexual orientation. He told me I should be proud of his statement and that he came forward and said that.
Here's my take on it: I think it is even worse to know that our Vice President didn't voice his opinion sooner. That Dick Cheney not only avoided persuading George W Bush in another direction, but he ALLOWED George W Bush to pursue AMENDING THE CONSTITUTION to state that his very own daughter was a second-class citizen. He supported the President in his motion, simply because he was the President. He threw away his personal convictions and the civil liberties and human rights of HIS OWN DAUGHTER, simply to avoid an apparent opposition within the administration. I find that disgusting and revolting.
I would get into my issues with the Log Cabin Republicans, but that's a whole other issue...it's like a group of Jews coming out in support of Mel Gibson's The Passion. Just seems like an oxymoron...in more than one way.
Mary Cheney was strangely missing from Dick's family portrait tonight after his speech. You've gotta wonder where she is.

She's probably fending off phone calls from outraged homos who are pissed off that she'd even consider helping her father get re-elected.
Seriously, no one questioned why David Duke didn't get the black vote when he was running for governor of Louisiana (I should know, I was there). Why is anyone surprised that I would never in any way vote for Bush?

Jamie good point.
I agree completely. How COULD Dick Cheney sit by and watch Bush do this and not act upon it. Who's a flip flopper now eh?
Part of me doesn't even believes it's true, he may be doing this for the pure fact of criticism by the HRC and Gay-Rights groups and it's almost election time.
He's using his own daughter as a political tool and I wish Mary wouldn't stand for it.

Posted: 9/2/04 at 8:10amPolitics...politics...politics. Especially at this point in the campaign I wouldn't attach any special significance to anything Cheney (or any candidate for that matter)says if you're looking for something deeper than politics. You don't have to be particularly insightful to visualize the strategy meeting that led up the Cheney's "support" statement..."present a softer face to this devisive issue to try to solidify the moderately liberal element, recognize that the President is holding to another course to try to solidify the far right elements. Soften Cheney's "war monger" image by presenting him as a caring father who, despite how he really feels, must suck it up and support his leader for the good of the party and the country. It's all about manipulating for votes... We'd like to think of that as a "bad" thing, but that's what politics is all about. I don't think that the gay community has been moved one iota by Cheney's statement and, let's face it, he isn't going to actually do anything to sway policy. Whether it swayed any uncomfortable, more liberal Republicans...or independents....remains to be seen.

Mary Cheney is a lesbian Repunzel. I support the contention that they're hiding her. This tent ain't so big, folks. Read accounts among the die hard base -- take Phyllis Schlafly, for example (take her, please). She is very, very turned off by Giuliani and that "moderate" tone--hell, she was offended by the Bush Twins. (So was I, but for far different reasons. Not exactly poster kids for Yale, hm? But then, neither is daddy.) These people may enjoy Arnold for an hour or two. But the pro-choice, pro-gay rights/gun control folk are being tolerated -- ironic term -- only to keep Bush in place.
The party has a built-in message about any moderate, tolerant agenda, and that message is built into the platform. Read it. It's right there in writing -- gays and women who want control over their reproductive freedom, and the girlie-men who support them -- need not apply for party leadership. Or even think of running for office.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at a dinner where Mary Cheney's girlfriend is a guest, but without Mary.
I wonder what goes through this 'in-law's' mind.

Oh yes, Phyllis Schlafly has a gay son.
What kind of 'Family Values' does she have?

Posted: 9/2/04 at 4:30pmAuggie - you are my hero! I am from San Francisco and live within view of city hall. I really wish more people could have witnessed the miracle that was outside city hall on Feb. 12th. First - it was my 40th birthday, and the greatest gift I recieved that day was the news that Dell Martin and Phyllis Lyon were married after being together for over forty years. All weekend long the line around city hall grew and grew. People would not leave. Even stumbling home (my 40th remember) at 3:00 am IN THE POURING RAIN the line still snaked two blocks around the building. I have never really thought much of marriage myself, I feel that as a gay man I have had to assimilate to straight life entirely too much. But to think the option is not there for me is something quite different. And to think there is an entire group of people who feel I should not have that right or option, even though I pay my taxes like they do - is an outrage. So back to the point - sorry for that - I think Mary Cheney should just go smack her father right upside the head!

It's already been said, but it's well worth repeating.

Jerry - I couldn't resist:
One sunny day in 2005 an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue, where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to the U. S. Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."
The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer resides here."
The old man said, "Okay," and walked away.
The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."
The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer resides here." The man thanked him and, again, just walked away.
The third day, the same man approached the White House and asked again to meet with President Bush.
The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Bush. I've told you already that Mr. Bush is no longer the president and no longer resides here. Don't you understand?"
The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it."
The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow."

Not that I can in ANY WAY really know or understand what goes through Ms. Cheney's mind, I do have to think it must be VERY difficult to have to deal with this. It is her father, afterall - and not everyone would be able to dissociate, under any circumstances.
It frightens me to think that a parent could override their feelings and pursue the course that he has. Phyllis Schlafly comes to mind.
