Masha & Serena Battle for #1 Spot Tomorrow in Madrid

Both Maria and defending champion Serena won their semifinal matches at the Mutua Madrid Open earlier today setting up a clash of the titans in tomorrow's final with the #1 ranking on the line. Both players are notorious big match players so it should be an interesting final.

As the defending French Open champion, Maria she can ill afford to lose to Serena tomorrow because it's unlikely that she'll be able to defend her title at Roland Garros later this month. Clay isn't Serena's strongest surface either but her record on dirt is better than Sharapova's and Sharapova won in Paris last year over a relatively weak field.

Whoever wins tomorrow's final will go into the French Open with a huge boost in confidence, especially Sharapova. And if Azarenka's fit, there could be a 3-way battle for #1 by year's end depending on how the rest of the season plays out.

Both the men and women's tour have a trivalry going on at the top which is good for the sport.
