It was an interview with Andre not a report.

and he'd have no interest whatsoever to place blame on the right as opposed to acknowledging the fact that he was not producing books that actually, you know, sold. i mean what reason would he have for doing that?

You completely misinterpreted Andre's point. He was never making a statement about the Newhouse family's politics (which are left of center anyway, but that's beside the point). He was saying that bottom-line publishing was dumbing down books the same way radio and television and magazines had been dumbed down. Not politically. CULTURALLY.

But his point was NEVER that he was being pressured to publish books "from the right." And he never took "hundreds" of writers with him. And Studs Terkel is not his "client."

Your imprecision and bombast constantly nullify the points you are attempting to make. (And I am speaking as an inveterate user of bombastic imprecision!) That is why you never persuade anyone

Who do I need to persuade? Imprecision and bombast? I hadn't realized this board was so sophisticated. The next time I will think before I start ranting about pubic hair.

I don't care what the reaction is. If someone is too stupid to do their own homework that is not my problem. One would hope that the last 6 years would have enlightened a few people in this country.

You are one to talk PJ, constantly sticking up for the most pathetic politicians working today. How can you continually post their incredulous rhetoric? Our current Democratic leadership is an embarrassment. I don't believe a word that comes out of their mouths. You watch PJ, we will hit Iran. Watch Pelosi, Obama, Edwards and Clinton do nothing.

I found one interview. There are more.

ANDRE SCHIFFRIN:

"Alberto Vitali said, why can't you publish more books on the right rather than on the left?

It was clear to us at that point that we were in a situation where there was no compromise, no solution. So all of my colleagues and I resigned at the same time, which is something that normally doesn't happen in publishing. When there's a new owner, everybody says, well, let's see maybe we can work it out, we don't want to leave our corner offices, and so on. But we did leave all together. "

"One of the things that struck me the most on Iraq is that during the first two years of the Bush administration, the crucial years, not a single large publisher, none of the conglomerates, published a book critical of what Bush was doing and what was going on in Iraq. "
