According to imdb's trivia, Maggie Cheung was in consideration for the role of Mameha.

Would it need to be?
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

The novel is "narrated" through the eyes of Chiyo, later Sayuri. It's certain commentary she makes that allows the reader a deeper understanding of the world she's in. I think a little narration would be good.

Considering the movie is still called MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, I'm sure there will be narration of some kind.
Although I love Maggie Cheung, I'm glad they chose Michelle Yeoh -- her demeanour seems better suited to the character.
