Memorial Day in Switzerland

Memorial Day in Switzerland

This was taken on a train going from southern Switzerland (where it was raining) toward Luzern, in the central part of the country. This was the sight that greeted me when we came out of a very long tunnel. (Note: the orange line is a reflection in the window of the lights on the ceiling of the train car)

was it snowing in Lucerne, or just down South?
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956

Neither. We were about 4,000 feet above sea level when the train came out of the Gotthard Tunnel. As we descended towards Luzern, the snow turned back into rain. The snow in the upper elevations really caused problems thoughout Switzerland. An office colleague was stuck in traffic by the Gotthard car tunnel because of the snow.

This reminds me of two memorable trips to Switzerland. The first was on a 3-day weekend spent traveling around the county via train. My stop-overs were in Luzern, Wengen, Basel and Geneva. I found the country so wonderful that I had to go back. A few years later my partner and spent a week, starting in Geneva and working our way to St. Moritz. Two nights were spent at RiffleAlp high above Zermatt. We woke each morning there watching the sun rise up the Matterhorn. It was truly magical.

BroadwayBulldog, my avatar (here it is in bigger size) was taken on my trip to Zermatt last September. When I arrived the Matterhorn was obscured by clouds. Even though the clouds cleared from the rest of the sky, that summit stayed stubbornly cloaked. I wasn't at the Rifflealp, but stayed in a hotel in Zermatt, and my room had a nice view of the Matterhorn. When I got up early the next morning, the sky was clear as a bell, and the photo in my avatar was taken about 7 a.m.

kec, your avatar is what stopped me and caused me to post. I have an almost identical picture, taken as the sun rose illuminating the Matterhorn. We sat out on the balcony, drinking an early morning cup of coffee and watched the sun rise. As I type this I'm looking at a triangular piece of slate that I picked up on a hike during our stay on Rifflealp which sits now on my desk. Your picture and my slate paperweight brought back wonderful memories of that weekend high above Zermatt. Thank you.

You're welcome Broadway Bulldog. :) Did your travels in Switzerland take you to Reichenbach Falls?

The photo is of the city of Lugano, taken from the top of Monte Bré, one of two mountains which "frame" the city. The other, seen in this photo, is San Salvatore, which also has a funicular to the top. You can see the storm clouds approaching.
