I was surprised at how rough Ethel Merman looked and although I know the material was trite, she doesn't really perform very well on screen. I was distracted by Ann Miller's red, white, and blue colored makeup pallet. And as for Carol Channing... well she was still doing that weird blush makeup thing under her eyes and across her nose from her Dolly days.

Did Ethel have something of a wonky right eye? It brought a new level of poignancy to, "Kiss today goodbye, and point me toward tomorrow..."
