On the scale of celebrities articulating political beliefs, with Paul Newman and Matt Damon getting 10's and Sarah Palin and that dithering Miss America candidate getting great big fat ZEROS...
I would rate Melissa Etheridge somewhere in the negatives, somewhere around Christine Ebersole.

I don't have as much contempt for her as some people. I just want her to know what she's talking about when she opens her mouth about important issues.
When you're as rich and privileged as Melissa and her partner are, you can pay lawyers to help you approximate many of the benefits of marriage without actually being allowed to have it. So when I see Melissa and her partner make comments that seem to be more in support of civil unions than marriage, it makes my stomach turn just a little bit.

I didn't even realize she supported Hillary Clinton and I'm not sure what that has to do with, well, anything.
He made the comments likening gays to pedophiles and incest (Fun Fact - did you know that in Illinois you can marry your first cousin after the age of 50? As long as you're of opposite sexes, that is) and while Melissa and her idiot wife may have interpreted his praise of her music as him not being a bigoted douchebag, props to them. It still doesn't make them right.
I don't believe any gay celebrity speaks for me, but I'm sure a lot of people out there DO think gay celebrities are speaking for all gay people, because they are the only gay people that get any sort of national exposure to speak about these matters, however ignorant they might be.

That's exactly right Phyl.
"I didn't even realize she supported Hillary Clinton and I'm not sure what that has to do with, well, anything."
That's sort of Joe's go-to point, I think it's supposed to make the people it's directed at gasp and say, "My GOD. Joe's right!"

Posted: 1/30/09 at 10:59amOh no, I have no hope of that ever happening. Just wondered if that would make anyone think she might be a little less Anti-Chritish if they knew that sometimes she espoused stupid political positions they agreed with.

So, a vote for Clinton was tantamount to giving Rick Warren a pass?
Speaking of stupid political positions, what's the deal with Obama the uniter getting nary a one Republican vote on his stimulus bill?

Posted: 1/30/09 at 11:25amYou know Phyllis, I hope the Democrats run on that one- the Republicans have admitted that there is no crisis so large that they would work with Democrats to solve it. They'd rather see the US Wallow in depression than see a Democratic president succeed. If I were running for office, that would be all I talked about.
