This is nothing new. There was a big blow up when the movie first came out in theatres. It seems in a scene with a kitten riding a log down a raging river. 6-8 kittens were used. only 2 of them lived to meow about it.

Yeah, I read about it before on imdb, but I'd always hoped it was just an urban legend.

If I remember correctly, it was a couple Americans working on the production who quit after seeing the cruelty during filing who came back home and broke the story. It really hurt the movie's box office when it was released here.
