I picked this book up at the library today and I don't know if I should read it or not. I tried WICKED like 3 times and just could not get into it. But, I read the first couple of pages of MIRROR, MIRROR at the library and thought I might enjoy this better but I want to get you guys and gal's opinions on the book. Likey or no likey?

I read "Confessions of An Ugly Stepsister", which I thought was far and away better than "Wicked." That would be either the book or the musical.
Much more compelling point of view, for one, including a (for the M. Night set) nice twist at the end.

That is the book I wanted to get today but it was out. So, I settled for Mirror, Mirror instead.

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier!
I have read "Mirror, Mirror" and I enjoyed it. As in his other books, it's his interpretations of familiar (and here, factual) stories, characters and figures that make the novel so compelling. I loved his versions of the dwarves, and the characterization of Lucrezia Borgia was, in my opinion, amazing. (Just try to beat the line "I am a woman who slept with my father, the Pope"!)
I've heard many positive as well as negative reviews of it.
Hope you enjoy it!

(P.S. - Sing a Song With Me, I agree with your opinions on "Confessions.")

I am in the middle of "Confessions of An Ugly Stepsister" and so far I really like it. I haven't read Wicked yet, but love the show, but my sister just read it (and is now reading the sequel) and from what she told me it is so different from the show! Nothing is the same almost its ridiculuos lol so I am worried about reading that and getting mad that they changed so much lol. Mirror, Mirror seemed confusing when I read the little blurb provided.

The only thing I don't like about Gregory Maguire is that he totally flips my favorite fairy tales upside down and makes me hate the originals re: Mirror, Mirror

Bwaylover, that's actually what I like about him! His books haven't necesssarily hate the original fairy tales; I just like reading a different interpretation.
When I first heard of it, I actually didn't believe that "Wicked" the musical was based on Maguire's book - so much was changed, so much was left out! The novel was wonderfully dark, cynical; beautiful in its ugliness. And Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz had to take it and fill it with more fluff and glitter than Glinda's wardrobe!
/end rant - I do, I admit, like the musical "Wicked."

I liked Mirror, Mirror. The rocks confused me a little. You'll have to read it to know what I am talking about...lol.

I started reading it last night and am on the 4th chapter, I believe. So far, I like it. It is an easier read than WICKED and not so drawn out and boring. But, I am only at the beginning so I shall read on and see how it goes.

Damn. I saw the thread title and thought we'd be talking about evil Spock with a goatee and Uhura with kick-ass thigh-high boots.

I enjoyed Mirror, Mirror more than Wicked. Lost was just not his best work what so ever!

I enjoyed Mirror Mirror. However, it took several chapters to get truly intrigued by it. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is my favorite thus far. I've read all of his novels except Son of a Witch. I thought Lost was good as well, though perhaps that is not a popular opinion. =)

I need to read his other works, I've only read Wicked. I LOVED Wicked, it was slow in some parts (ew Elphaba stop breeding flying monkeys and sewing wings on that's gross.) but overall I truly felt it was brilliant. I think the way Maguire writes is very intriguing. I don't have much desire to read Son of a Witch though.

Ugh . . . I stopped reading it. I was so confused about who was talking when. Each chapter is someone else talking in the first person and I kept going, "Wait. Who is talking now?" Also, it started getting boring so I think I will try STEPSISTER and if I don't like that either than I give up on Maguire.
