Something is really wrong when the front page of 2 NY dailys involves a botched scratch off game in 1 local paper & a new stadium while the Minnesota school massacre was on page 4 & 5 respectively
What happen there is a tad more important than some people crying in their beer they did not win a few bucks. My heart goes out to those families who lost a loved one
Mine does too. I could only guess what papers these were.

Dude, they're tabloids. Expecting them to act like respectable journalistic institutions is like expecting Michael Jackson to act like a respectable human being.

Naturally it wasn't on the front page. It happened on an Indian reservation school in northern Minnesota, and not at a middle class suburban high school like Columbine. It's not just the tabloids--coverage throughout the media has been much less extensive.
Bring race or ethnicity into this does not cut it
Whatever the reasons are, it has nothing to do with whwere it was committed. It is all about what will sell papers
Are those two the most popular "subway" papers?

Sadly, I think race might play into it a bit. Here's one of the first articles to pop into Google News when this happened. It's mostly a history of all the violent crime on the res in the 70s and 80s, with a little acknowledgement at the bottom that they've been turning things around since the 90s.
You see, when a kid in a nice, wholesome white suburb does this, it's a shock. When it happens on an Indian reservation? Sadly, not so much. I doubt people would pay as much attention if it was a black kid from Atlanta, either.

Anybody who doesn't think race or ethnicity is the reason this isn't treated with the same gravitas as Columbine is a drunk or a fool or both. Now, what could the editors who decide what story will sell to New York tabloid readers saying about the issue of race for those readers? And are they accurate?

I think the media may view the story as being of less general interest because of where it happened and who the victims were. Unfortunately, it's pretty obvious that all lives and all deaths aren't of equal value in the mainstream commercial press. As mentioned, it's all about what is perceived will sell more papers.

Right. Race and ethnicity.

Of course. Isn't it funny how all the prominent kidnapping cases are of little white (and usually blonde) girls?

Funny sad yeah.
i think it's just shocking that all them li'l white girls is being snatched.

Well, as long as we've mentioned race and ethnicity, how about that other great unmentionable category "class." That, too, plays a part in what's considereded worth covering in depth.

Ohhhhhhhh yeah. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh yeah. Kidnapped girls named "Tanisha" are inherently less newsworthy than little kidnapped girls named "Ashley," "Amanda" or "Jennifer." Right?
When kids disappear from housing projects, it's just not as interesting than when it's from McMansions.

Well, those depraved people kidnap and shoot each other all the time, right? Where's the news?

it's kinda sad to think that the value of human life and the acknowldegement of the sins against it are prioritized by rich, white newspaper editors.

All lives and stories are created equal. It's just that many are more equal than others.
