Question: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the United States on a world map. Why do you think this is?
Miss Teen South Carolina: "I personally believe the U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh...people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and...I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., err, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our...[bell rings]

I remember days
Or at least I try
But as years go by
They're sort of haze
And the bluest ink
Isn't really sky
And at times I think
I would gladly die
For a day of sky

I was on the phone with WAT after this and we were both like, "WTF?" I'm really surprised that she was the 3rd runner up as opposed to 4th after that answer.

Tazber, was your link of the clip deleted?
If I were her, I would have demanded another question, or she would have been better off saying, "Good question. I really don't have a clue as to why some people can't locate the United States on a map, it certainly is big enough. Thank you."

Trump, why am I not taken aback by this?

I was flipping the channels and turned to that exact moment that night. God, it was a trainwreck. I felt bad for her, but it still gave me a good laugh. the funny thing is the way she started in so confidently, you could tell that she was coached to start her sentence with "I personally believe that..." no matter what the question was, and that's really all she knew how to say.

Posted: 8/27/07 at 3:45pmhow fitting that there were Ann Coulter advertisements to the right of, and under that video........that girls answer was to moronic!

Posted: 8/27/07 at 3:48pmYou could really see the gears in her brain the entire time trying to come up with something to say. It was so incoherent.

At least she's pretty.

But you really do have to feel a little sorry for her. She went through all the hair bleaching and body tanning and powdering and dance lessons and starvation diets to mess up like that?
AND HAVE ( of all people) MARIO LOPEZ LAUGH AT HER?
I have to feel sorry for her.

It's kind of like the stock answer, "world peace". She figured she'd cover all bases by mentioning Iraq and South Africa.
By all means, I'm sure the nerves got to her, and it's probably a moment she keeps running over and over again through that pretty little head of hers.

So I actually watched 3/4s of this thing. To be fair, the question is the kind of thing that is debated in educational theory seminars not teen-age beauty pageants.
The reason that she did not finish as 4th runner-up are two-fold: SC was sweet and pretty and more importantly, the one who did finish as 4th runner-up (WVA) was easily perceived as a bitch.
I called the finish in the exact order and picking the winner was a no-brainer. I can't remember the particular states now, but I did call it on the money.
The Colorado Kid who won said that Paris, Nicole and Lindsay were not her role models and that got a rousing round of whooping applause and clinched it for her right there. It showed that she could think on her feet, be gracious and be funny with just enough smarts.
Mario Lopez is a perfect host for this kind of thing. How many other good looking young men can be that charming in such a mindless arena? He does need to help in the swimsuit competition by donning a Speedo however.
