I was there the other day (and I spazzed gleefully when I saw the van Goh, Manet, Monet, Vermeer, and Renoir paintings. Totally made my life)

While walking through the modern art exhibition, I analyzed what I saw carefully. And I came to a conclusion. I understand Andy Warhol and that one painting that I'm killing myself for not knowing....it takes up almost the entire wall and is white and brown, on two canvases put together.... I also LOVED the painting that lookd like a photograph of the man with the glasses. Amazing.

BUT I just don't understand the paintings by I believe her name was Elisabeth Kelly? I don't quite remember her first name, but I know her last name was Kelly.

re: Modern Art at the Metropolitan

Was it Ellsworth Kelly?

If it was, don't feel bad, Sally. I been looking at art for over 30 years and I still don't understand him.

I have to be at the Met this week, and I'll search out those pictures you like. I don't go to the Modern Art department enough. I like the older stuff.

Here are two pictures at the Met I like a lot. The first is a self-portrait by Marie-Denise Villers (French 1774 -1821). It was formerly thought to be by the much better-known Jacques-Louis David. It's a beautiful and haunting picture no matter who painted it, but I do liike the fact that it is by an artist so obscure and forgotten that even most experts on French painting have never heard of her. I sure hadn't!

The second is "Salome" by Henri Regnault (French 1843 -1871). Her face looks flushed and her hair is tousled from dancing and she has this wonderful smartass look on her face. I love her feet on the animal skins and the transparant skirt with gold bands shot through it. Love the yellow and black color scheme of it. Its dangerous and sexy.

"Christ, Bette Davis?!?!"

No I don't remember the name but isnt it incredible?!

Master- Yes! Elisworth Kelly. Oh it's a man? Right I feel stupid. Either way what he did totally wizzed by me.

I agree completely with the paintings you slected. I love LOVE the color in the first one.

Have you ever seen (in person or in book, or print) this one painting, that I hit myself for forgetting the title and artist but it's in the Lourves Museum in Paris and it's a BEAUTIFUL painting of these two romantic lovers, and the man is making colors for the woman to express his love. And it was just SO beautiful. I've been looking for a print/poster to hang up in my room but I can't find it anywhere.

I was SO thrilled about seeing the van Goh paintings though. Completely made my life.
