Monologue Help

I never have any idea how to choose a contemporary monologue. At the bookstore they have all these monologues, but they are not from published plays. Should I choose one from a published play? Do any of you have any recommendations for some plays or authors that I should check out for monologues? What do schools most prefer? Thanks for any help! Ashley

I wouldn't go with the "ready-made" monologue from the bookstores...ever, really, but ESPECIALLY if you are auditioning for schools. It looks lazy. Some monologue books DO have monologues taken from plays, but that doesn't necessarily mean they work as monologue pieces. Just ask yourself: What do you have to offer as an actor? Are you humorous? Youthful? Dry? Wacky? Intense? Romantic? Sexy? What kind of plays have spoken to you in the past? What playwrights do you like? Talk to teachers or coaches about what would be a good monologue for you.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali
