Monologue needed pronto!
Monologue needed pronto!#1

BFA auditions are coming up a lot quicker than I'd like, and I'm in need of one more monologue... I'll be using it for my Tisch audition and for Emerson College. Tisch wants contrasting pieces, and Emerson wants one piece that "allows the performer to shine through" My first piece for Tisch is from "The Illusion" by Tony Kushner (I'm hopelessly attatched to that play) and it portrays an angry young woman whose lover has spurned her. I need another contemporary piece, 2-3 minutes, that contrasts that. I'd prefer something intimate and personal, as the Kushner piece has more of an outward focus. Can anyone help me?
You'd think with all of the reading I've been doing I could find a monologue. Seriously. Grr.

There is a beautiful Nan monologue in Richard Greenberg's Three Day's of Rain that's got a quiet kind of sadness that might contrast well.
Hope it's of some help :)

Seriously:
If you've already got a serious monologue then go for it and tell them a long, complicated, multi-voiced joke. Find a guaranteed winner and then practice it until it is burned into your head and becomes your own, and then go in and nail it. It can be ever-so-slightly blue and/or ethnic.
They will remember you. Remember they have been listening to sensitive words all damn day and no matter how good the auditionees are after a while, they all become a Big Blur. A good laugh would do them (and you) a world of good.
It also will telegraph to them that you are willing to take risks and most importantly, can play comedy which is a skill unto itself.

WOSQ, most, if not all, BFA programs require that audition monologues be from published plays. Telling a joke is not going to be looked upon favorably.
I love Richard Greenberg's plays, he's one of my favorite playwrights, but the role of Nan is not age appropriate for college auditions.
A good online resource for BFA audition information is College Confidential. There are numerous discussions there about finding the right audition material:

I will emphasize that those of you who are still searching for material are VERY late in the process, so please try to find your monologues ASAP and work at mastering them, even if it means choosing one which is not what you consider perfect for you.

Posted: 1/10/08 at 6:37pmargh, I know I'm late in the process! I started the search in August (which granted is probably also too late for some people) and have been reading plays like a madwomen since. I read over thirty plays last semester. You'd think that SOMEWHERE I'd be able to find a 2-3 minute contemporary monologue. But I haven't, as terrible as that is. And yes, I've checked and rechecked them all. I couldn't find anything. I'm out of money from spending it all on plays and I'm nearly out of options.

Just thought of some other things.
Rocket Man by Stephen Dietz (the daughter or the mother.)
Eleemosynary by Lee Blessing (do you look young? she's young.)
Extremities and The Woolgatherer by William Mastrosimone.
Fat Men in Skirts by Nicky Silver. (Popo Martin is crazy. Can be overdone, but if done really well, golden.)
Burn This by Lanford Wilson. (Anna's butterfly monologue)
I'll keep thinking. Good luck!

Okay, I think I've picked one... FINALLY!
C's closing monologue from Three Tall Women. Is this overdone?
It's aggrivating because I read Three Tall Women over a year ago, and I loved it, and I promptly forgot about it when looking for monologues. Huh.
