I watched this for the first time the other night, and it was pretty interesting - a couple moved onto a vegetariain cooperative, something very different from what they're used to - they live in the Bronx. They couldn't have their computers, phones, even their hair products were taken away.
The one I'm watching tonight is Mr. Spurlock and his fiance spending a month living on mininum wage. At the beginning, he talks about how they have been "living the high life" for a while now. They (especially her) are whining and complaining every step of the way and it just feels so ridiculous to me. It's 30 days! I can't get over the fact that when the 30 days are up, they'll be back living "the high life" and that their experiment is actually bringing them more money in the long run and it's just really bugging me that they are being so whiny about it.
It's an incredible show. I learned a lot on the Christian living with Muslims episode. This show should be required viewing.
This is a marathon tonight and I really want to see that one! It's on next but I have to be up early so I can't stay up for it.
I saw the environmentalist one the other night. At first, I thought I was going to hate the girl more, because she was whining about not having her "products", but in the end she really seemed to be trying to get along with the other people there and make it work.
The guy got on my nerves at first with the meat-obsession, mainly because of the bunny hunting, but in the end, I was just pissed at the people at the Dancing Rabbit. Twice they promised him he could go and get meat while they were out, and both times, they said "Oops, sorry we don't have any time." It's like they were TRYING to give him false hope just to pacify him for the moment, then take it back. I'm a vegetarian too, but at least I understand that not everyone shares my opinion. Even when he went out of his way to find organic, freerange beef to fit with their lifestyles and could have some steak, they still freaked out. The guy lecturing him about the meat industry was just a pain, people like him are the reason I get yelled at whenever I mentioned I don't eat meat, because everyone thinks I'm going to lecture them.
Gah, sorry for the rant. But it's a great show and I wished I had started watching it sooner.
I am with you skittles. I thought the same thing about the wife and then ended up liking her, although I did find her taunting of him a bit ridiculous and cruel.
I know if it were me, after a certain time I probably would have needed some meat as well and would have been really upset if I had been teased by the co-op members the way he was. But it was a good episode.
The gay one is good, too, though I do not feel like the gay minister did a good job (or footage shown at least) of conveying why not all churches believe that being gay is a sin.
I've only seen the two I mentioned and the one I'm watching now, which is the guy taking the "youth supplements."
i have all six episodes if anyone is interested in a dvd copy. they're all very interesting.

This has already been done superbly by Barbara Ehrenreich in "Nickel & Dimed". Spurlock should get some original material.
