So I just got home after a long night and what felt like a near-fatal cab ride.....and there is a mouse sitting on the floor in my kitchen.

Now, I'm not afraid of mice, but I don't know what to do. It's more than likely been poisoned (there was a previous problem in the building and there is still poison around) since it is just sitting there docile, barely moving. Definitely breathing and alive, though.

I can't bear to kill it, I can't just leave it there (I have a dog and don't want him near it for his own safety), and I really don't want to just put it in a box to die....I suppose I can take it outside? If it's dying anyway, I don't know what I ought to do...I'm not near any "green space" and I'm sure as hell not walking to the Dewitt Clinton park at 2:15 AM and I feel REALLY BAD for the little guy, but I can't just do nothing!!

Any ideas?

Put him on a box with some sheets or something fluffy inside, that may help him a little, poor mice!
I hope he dies quickly and don't suffer too much

The super is beyond useless and it's reeaaaly late...plus call him to what, come take it away to kill it?

Thanks, thoughre: Mouse - Help

I know, I feel awful--he's just sitting there twitching his little nose, but he's obviously not well.

eta: Thanks guys. I guess I will go the box route for now and take it outside in the morning? Updated On: 12/4/04 at 02:21 AM

wait, where do you live? if you live in NY, surely you've killed mice before. you could place it outdoors to be attacked by a cat or similar animal, or let it die a peaceful dignified death in your kitchen. but you'd best try and find that mouse hole, the whole family might just be waiting to move in.

Ok well I meant later about calling the super. Sorry, I'm not quite awake. You can jsut take it outside. But I'd definitely clal the super in the morning and have them come up and look to see if maybe the can patch up the hole.

Matt, I love your avatar--I met Dennis (Mr. Belding!!) back when I lived in LA and my boyfriend worked on the show.

Yeah, I'm in NY but I've thankfully avoided ever killing any mice--I've always found them dead. Yep, the family is surely waiting in the wings with their bags packedre: Mouse - Help

Sadre: Mouse - Help

And...if I take him outside and he's eaten by a cat or whatever, then that poison gets in their system too?!

AAAHHH.

Well you're probably best putting it in a box or something andletting him die peacefully in your kitchen.

I absolutely adore your soft-heartedness. Just wanted to say that! I hope the problem gets solved.
Oh, and do keep an eye out on the mouse hole. There might be more. And if they die in your house, it can smell really bad.

Chinkie, they are everywhere. Last year when I was living in a two bedroom house in Georgia alone and by myself, the mice were the worst part! I swear, if I don't see another rat for the rest of my life, I'll be happy.
But New York rats are a bit different, I suppose.

chinkie, in four apartments in the city, this is the only one I've dealt w/ this in...it's an ancient Hell's Kitchen tenement SLUM, so not all NYC places have to deal with it like this. Well, there are the rats outside, but that's another story!

Thanks Chrysanthemum...I hate feeling helpless to do anything meaningful for him thoughre: Mouse - Help

hmm okay, i dont feel that bad. Believe it or not, the only mouse that ive seen was a field mouse in my garage. Ive never seen a rat or anything in chicago or even on my visits to nyc.

grownupgroupie I hope you come up with the best and sufficiant solution.

This is a tiny little mousey--probably not too different from a field mouse.

Anyway, I got him in the boxre: Mouse - Help He seemed a lot more alert and moved around a little bit, but not with any real speed so I still think he's either unwell or poisoned. I guess I'll see if he's still alive by morningre: Mouse - Help

mice are OK, a minor nuisance. it's the 1 rat I've had and any of the nastier of the many roaches I've killed that have had me considering finding a hotel for the night. roaches are easy though, spray with poison and vacuum them up! the rat took a little more hands-on work. ugh.

That poor thing, reading this thread made me SO upset!

Try and feed it something - and why is there poison around? If you care so much about it dying peacefully, GET RID OF THE POISON! But I know it's not your poison, it's probably just all around the building for big rats and stuff. Personally, I would never be able to kill anything. Ending an animal's life just because "we can" is the worst. I would take it to the vet - honestly, but I'm crazy.

I hope it all turns out okay!

*bump*

SO.....continued to check on the mouse a few times before I went to bed--not scampering around or anything, but definitely alive and moving around some.

Anyway, it is STILL ALIVE this morning....and I'm leaving town for a night....what do I do? I'm still convinced if I took it to a park it would probably just sit there and not scamper away, so I still believe it's been poisoned, but WTF!!!

I guess, since you're leaving, just take it to somewhere safe, like a park. That's probably the best you can do.
