...I tried searching on IMDB but the number of hits (in the thousands) didn't help much.
A friend and I are in the mood to have several "movie nights" with a different European country we'll be travelling to as a theme. We're focusing on England, France, Italy, Greece, Spain and Morocco (not European, I know). We're looking for movies that best showcase the filming locations and culture (e.g. Amelie) or that are just plain fun to watch (e.g. Spice World).
Any suggestions? We've come up with a few but I'm curious what people would think of off the top of their heads.
(By the way, "One Night In Paris" does NOT count as a European movie, thanks.

A Room With a View - Florence!

Good one! I almost got ran over by Julian Sands on his bike when I was in Florence in the spring (no joke - at least, according to my local tour guide who says he's commonly seen around) so that movie's been on a list of ones I must watch for Italy night!
Thanks Undi. I was having trouble coming up with movies set in Greece. I thought I'd be settling for Disney's Hercules!
"Everyone Says I Love You" was shot in Venice. Not the entire movie, of course, but it's still a great film. Oh... and they filmed partly in Paris too!
Ok, now I know it's a bad movie and the acting really isn't as good as it could be BUT "Chasing Liberty" is a wonderful movie if you are looking for a movie that shows Europe. The cinematography is amazing and the shots of the country side throughout Europe are Breathtaking. They shot in Prague, Austria, Venice, and Berlin. You forget sometimes that it's a Mandy Moore film, but it's one of my favorite cheesetastic movies!
(WickedlyPerfect, I'm embarrassed to say that I watched 'Chasing Liberty' in March for our first "Europe Movie Night" for that exact reason.
)
And thanks, Lamc!
haha, YES! That makes me happy! How did you like it? (btw, I dragged my ex to see that movie THREE times when it was in the theaters. Matthew Goode is the best!)
This is an oldie, but The Red Shoes, aside from its classic status and Broadway connections, is set all over Europe, with some especially gorgeous shots of the south of France.
no prob! :)
WickedlyPerfect, I thought it was a corny cheesefest, but I wasn't watching it for the quality, I was watching it for the pretty cinematography and locations! (Matthew Goode and that other guy who played the kooky klepto backpacker were charming though.) I've seen in twice.
(Between this and 'Spice World', I'm really incriminating myself tonight!)
have you considered "Roman Holiday" or was that a given? I also love "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"
"Roman Holiday" was a given.
I haven't seen "Robin Hood" before though!
I'm a HUGE Robin Hood fan (from the cartoon all the way to Errol Finn's version). This is my favorite due to the scenery. Filmed entirely in England and France. Once you get over Kevin Costner's nonexistant accent (which most people find trouble doing) it's a wonderful movie.
Good call then. I'll be sure to rent it (even though I'm not a Kevin Costner fan!).
I used to be a Costner fan. I am a HUGE Morgan Freeman fan however, and he is great in this film. Alan Rickman also is amazing in his role!
I highly recommend "L'auberge Espagnole", a story about a French grad student who goes to Barcelona, Spain to study Spanish. There's some English, French, Spanish, Italian and Danish spoken in the film. it's such a great hodge-podge of Europe; the French grad student lives with 6 other people, with Belgian, Danish, Spanish, English, Italian and German roomates. The Belgian girl is a lesbian and there's a funny scene where she teaches the French guy how to seduce a woman.
There are beautiful shots of Barcelona as well; it totally made me want to watch the movie. Audrey Tatou ("Amelie") has a small part in this movie...as well as Kelly Reilly, who recently starred in "Mrs. Henderson Presents". I highly recommend it! Just as long as you don't mind subtitles...
L'auberge Espagnole (The Spanish Apartment, I think?)
Before Sunset - Paris
But be sure to watch "Before Sunrise" before you watch "Before Sunset"
as mentioned by munkustrap, Before Sunset takes place in Paris, "Before Sunrise" takes place in Vienna or on the way to Vienna from Budapest. Sunrise was made first (1995), Sunset was made recently (2004)

I'm rather fond of Italian for Beginners, Chocolate and Little Voice. I watch a lot of foreign films, so I'm sure I can come up with more after I've had some coffee!
