UPDATE:
I just got an email from Sony tonight. They are replacing my PS3 and have sent the new one via UPS. It's due to arrive in 3 days.
Wow!
The warranty, however, is still the original 1-year warranty OR a 90-day (limited) warranty on this new player. Whichever one is longer.
I think I only had about 3 months left on my old warranty, so for me they're about the same. Maybe the 90-day limited goes a few more days.
I sure hope this new PS3's not a lemon! And I hope it lasts several years (like 10 maybe) before it needs replacing. I also hope it arrives in one piece!
Anyway, that's the latest. I will keep you posted on the new player's performance once I hook it up and give it a whirl. It's a good thing too! I just got my Blu-ray Disc for "Sleeping Beauty" a couple of days ago, and I'm anxious to try it out.

Posted: 10/17/08 at 12:23amI just saw my BD Sleeping Beauty tonight. It's awesome. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I'll have to wait until I upgrade to a changer before I get all the new profile 2 stuff w BD Live, etc. But the movie was fantastic. To think all that was painted by hand! They must have used an airbrush for some of the scenic elements, I don't know how else it could have been done, though I'm not a painter.

Can't wait!
I know one of the cool "live" features involves the disc's menus. They are of Sleeping Beauty's castle (aka, the one in Disneyland). But the "live" part is that it will go out and query the weather report for your area (assuming you've registered your player with a city, state and Zip code), and it will play the appropriate background on the menu.
In other words, if it's raining outside while you put the disc in, it will be raining on the castle in the menus. If it's snowing outside, it'll be snowing on your menus, etc.
Very cool!

UPDATE!
My Blu-ray player arrived today, and I have to say, that was a fantastic turnaround from Sony's customer service/repair team.
I filled out the form online, submitted it, 3 days later they sent me an empty box with shipping instructions, I loaded it up, dropped it at a drop-off center, and 3 days after that it was on its way back to me. Actually a NEW player was on its way back to me. But they put an HD trailer that I had downloaded on it, plus my PS3 login stuff. It was ready to go!
I just hooked it up, and it worked! I had to redo my Wi-Fi settings (which took all of 2 minutes), and once I was on the Internet I downloaded the latest version of BD-Live and that was it.
And I just watched "Sleeping Beauty" on BD, and I have to say, this is (without question) my favorite Blu-ray Disc yet released. They have such fantastic special features! (And no, I'm not a shill. I didn't work on this disc. In fact, I just did my first Disney title ever, right before I left my full-time job.)
The best feature (so far) is the Cinexplore (picture-in-picture). It's like watching a first-rate behind-the-scenes documentary while you're watching the film at the same time. They use stills, new interviews and archival interviews in a constant stream of entertaining information. It's intelligent, light, fun and first-rate quality.
I guess this is my 10/10 review! But if you have a BD player or a PS3, this is a must-own disc. Without question. It's also a 2-disc set with a "free third disc" standard-def DVD of the movie thrown in for good measure. Disney did it right, on their first classic release! Pinocchio is coming out in early 2009, and I already can't wait to see what they do with that one! There is an HD trailer on this BD, and the transfer looks stunning. They are treating their "catalog" titles (an industry term for anything that isn't a brand new release) as GOLD. As well they should!
So... I'm a happy camper tonight.
I should also add that I noticed a huge difference in this new PS3 player. My old one heated up very quickly after only a half hour's play (usually). It made the discs hot, and the fan would often kick in, and sometimes it was very noisy. This new player stayed relatively cool (no hotter than your average DVD player) and no fan kicked in! And I was watching for over 2 hours.
I think I just had a lemon player, the first time.
So now, I want to keep my fingers crossed that this PS3 lasts for the duration (7-10 consumer years, which it SHOULD!). I absolutely love having it, and it is a huge difference (not just in picture and sound quality) from DVD. Owning a disc like Sleeping Beauty shows you what's possible in this new format. And this is only the beginning. I hope other studios take note. Actually, I KNOW they are watching this release like a hawk right now.
It really has set the bar for everything to come.

you'll need to re-title this thread after that post!
I was thoroughly enchanted by Sleeping Beauty in high definition. The music is beautiful, too, with very good audio quality.
I have taken this disk out to show friends the dance sequence (between the Prince and Aurora in the woods) when they have stopped by. Everyone's been impressed and all now want to see the whole film in BD. I don't usually just pop on a scene to show to people.
Yep, it's a must have, if you ask me. I noticed it is a limited release, meaning that after a while it will not be available, if I understand that correctly.

Posted: 10/21/08 at 11:53pmGlad to hear that it all worked out for you, B12B. I wish SONY had replaced by PS3 when I sent it out to be repaired. It's been playing okay since I got it back, but it still runs hot and the noisy fan kicks in after about 30 minutes. It can be very distracting at times. Something tells me that this PS3 isn't going to last and I'm eventually going to have to replace it. I'm just not having much luck with SONY products lately; although I agree that their turn-around time on the PS3 repair was impressive.

Anyone who is looking for an inexpensive Blu-Ray player should check out Best Buy and their Insignia Brand on sale for 200 dollars right now. I own a regular Insignia Brand and I have to say it is a great brand.
I don't know if I am ready to move to Blu-Ray yet. I will have to wait and see, though if the one Sony is going on sale for 149 dollars (rumored) then I may try to get up early and go Day After Thanksgiving Shopping!
