I'm sorry for all of your troubles kids, but I'm most troubled that noone has made a dick or viagra joke yet!
lol @ doodlenyc...i'm puerto rican my "external hard drive" never gives out... we're not built that way.
and just wtf is viagra?!!!
It's a drug that fixes your external "hard" driver.
And you definitely don't want it backed up.
One external drive is not enough. Any kind of disc can get corrupted and any kind of drive is just another mechanical piece that can fail.
Multiple backups are necessary, of your most important files.
And one of those backups should be offsite. I have a friend who once a month burns his most important files to a disc and he then mails the disc to his parents (who live out of state) and they store the discs in a shoebox for him. Cheap and effective.

Have you tried freezing the hard drive? I've heard of that working in some instances - and there are plenty of places online where people say they've had success recovering their files - but I've never known anyone who did it personally.
purchased my new xternal hard drive this morning. the files on the old one were not able to be retrieved. in the process of rebuilding my music library.
i'm also extracting whatever was in my ipod into my xternal so at least some music was salvaged.
oh....and this xternal has a backup system...i also purchased a spindle of dvd-r's.
this ain't happ'nin to me again!
the files on the old one were not able to be retrieved
That's what I thought about the hard drive on my old laptop. Try Sherlock.
