Betas only can live about two years max. If you have a Beta that makes three years that's a near miracle.
If you are interested, I will tell you how you can communicate with your fish and they will adore you beyond food.

You will notice the beta has little fanning "fins" to each side of its face that it comes over and waves around as it is looking at you.
Put your thumbs under each respective side of your chin with your palms facing forward.
Fan your fingers up and down to say "hello" to your fish.
I generally tell it aloud about its sweetness and beauty and that I love it at the same time.
They get the message and they love it.
They positively strut-swim afterward.

Not that I expect an answer, but Elphaba, how does one sit in an unopened can?
Mine lived a year and a half. Not bad. My boss' beta has been trying to commit suicide all week. They were the same age. (at least we got them at the same time)
I was just thinking tonight how I would like to have a Beta. Oh and a lavender one would be perfect. How does one breed that color?

Breeding is a complex art and it took a succession of breedings and a little thermometer-based heater for the tank to keep the water a perfect temperature. I do not recommend it unless you can spare a lot of time for the fish. If you become successful at it as I did, it gets overwhelming as they produce a zillion eggs and offspring.
I believe I finally bread a big fat pink full-of-eggs female to a purple male and got over 200 stunning mostly lavender fish. Take your breath away gorgeous.
Just go check out a big display of them at a good fish pet store. You may get lucky and find a lavender. Remember they are from Thailand (Siamese Fighting Fish) and they need a warm room. A chilly room'll kill them. Hawaii was perfect with no A/C in the room.

The first go-round I bred a blue male to a red female to get some purple out of the breed.
The blue male was such a noble father, valiantly keeping his floating nest of eggs in bubbles as they are air-breathers (like goldfish) so you don't need to aerate their tank. You have to take the female out of the tank after they breed as they are dumb and will eat the eggs. The male will attack her for this as the male is the true parent of the species. He makes a bubble nest to attract the female.
Their breeding process and courtship dance is quite elaborate and I will tell you about it sometime. Amazing to watch.

The male attracts the female by displaying his glorious fins to her.
She goes all ga-ga over them, entranced by it all as she has next to zip for fins herself.
i have red male, a blue male, and a pink and blue female, all bettas.
i got the red one december 27th 2003. he's old
the blue one is actually my cousin's fish... i'm taking care of it while he's away at college untill he gets his own place, and the female is relitively new :)

I never allowed my fish to fight or be fought even if it was their nature.
That is something only mean people and gamblers do.
They were my pampered darlings.
