Certain (usually smaller) breeds are more prone to it than others. Don't be surprised if the kneecap slips off again. My Sheltie's did and I could actually pop it back into place myself. (Canine and human kneecaps are not the same.) Ultimately, my Sheltie had to have surgery to tighten the loosened tendons that hold the kneecap in place. The surgery went fine and completely cured the problem. Just wanted to tell you in case Corey's patella pops out again. It can be permanently fixed. Should this happen, just be sure to get a surgeon with experience in this particular surgery. I have heard of problems with the surgery if it is done by a vet who does it infrequently.

Well, Miranda3, the dislocation happened again this past weekend while we were in Bucks County. You can see how he feels about it from the picture. I think we're going ahead with a permanent fix since it's happened twice now.
I'm researching good docs.

If you ask around in your area, you will find vets who specialize in this surgery; other vets will know who they are. Best idea is to call a vet specialty clinic and ask for recommendations. After the surgery, Corey's leg will be wrapped up like a little leg of lamb in bandaging. It is very important that the bandaging not get wet. When Katie, my Sheltie, had the surgery, it was rainy here, so I devised a bandage bag for her out of a heavy-weight Zip Loc bag so that she could go outside to potty. The recovery went fast and, as I said, she never had an issue with the leg post-surgery. I wish you luck, and please report back!
