My son's a drug addict! Stop letting gays marry!

Judge Roy Moore is a so-and-so who ought to have been impeached after the 10 Commandments mess, in which case he wouldn't still be around to go to war against gay people. He hasn't noticed that states can't nullify federal law. 'Nuff said.

What a sweet story! It got me thinking about a few silly points, however. Until recently, most of the same sex marriages taking place involved couples who were living as if married, and would have married long ago had the law allowed it. In other words, no one had to "pop the question." Mixed sex couples have always assumed that the man would do the "asking," even if the woman has been throwing more and more obvious hints. In a same sex relationship, however, is there some sort of protocol about who asks, such as the older partner? If not, anyone who offers a ring takes a giant risk because, if the other partner wants to get married, wouldn't he or she have offered a ring first? (Oy, does this get circular!)

Also, is there a specific style for an engagement ring to be worn by a man? Should each partner wear an engagement ring? Should they wear matching rings? What happens to the engagement ring after the marriage? Where is Emily Post when you need her?

I'm honestly curious, and not just commenting on the need for new customs. BTW, I'm writing a gay-themed musical based on "The Phantom of the Opera" -- the original Leroux novel. In the novel, Raoul and Christine "play at being engaged." In my musical, two young men in love in the 1890's "play at being engaged." I felt awful for my fictitious couple knowing that they could only keep on "playing."
