All,

I recently purchased tickets to the second night of the Sondheim Concert in March at the New York Philharmonic. This will be my first time attending a performance at Avery Fisher. I am sitting in the Third Tier and was wondering what the proper dress will be for this event.

Thanks for any and all advice.

I personally would say to dress a little nicer than you usually do for the theatre. My friend and I are wearing cocktail dresses (mine is black). So, at the very least, I would suggest a jacket.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

We're going the first night. I was planning on a jacket...

Jacket and tie. A suit would be even better. Just so you know: you'll find dirtbags dressed in sneakers and jeans floating around here and there.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and suggestions.

I have another question....my seat in Avery Fisher is the third tier, on the side, and toward the stage. The seat was listed as partial view.

Does anyone have any experience with this general area? Can you explain what it means by partial view?

Thanks,
-Eddie

It means you'll be seated on the side. The theatre is "U" shaped and in all probability, you'll be facing the opposite side of the theatre. Oh, you can sit on an angle to face the stage and it's not uncomfortable. Remember, this hall was designed to LISTEN to music, not to SEE a starry cast. It's not bad, though. I sat there for the legendary FOLLIES in concert, as well as for one performance of SWEENEY TODD, starring the magnificent Patti LuPone.

You might want to bring opera glasses.

We're on the second tier in (I think) box 12 - about half way back. Would you recommend opera glasses for that too, or is that close enough to see?

I'd bring 'em. The worst that happens is that you carry them with you without using them. On the other hand, if you DON'T bring them and find out that you need them, you're up that creek without a paddle.
