Clearly you are trying to find an apartment. They sure don't make the process easy, especially if you're on a budget.
The last time I was moving 3 years ago, I went to about 5 different brokers offices and everytime I told them what I was looking for and how much I wanted to pay they would paint a picture that was so bleak and tell me that it was going to be tough to find something in that price range...even though my price range was comparable to what was out there. Of course they're going to say that. You paying more gets them more commission. I eventually found what I was looking for but it was the most stressful process.

Thanks Tom! I'm actually trying to help my friend find one before he moves back here, but I really think he's going to have to be here looking on his own behalf. Telling brokers you're looking for a friend makes them act more strangely than usual. One wouldn't even tell me how much the stupid rent was. He was really, really weird in general.
They always paint a bleak picture, yeah. When I was looking one even laughed at my budget. Oh, you're so cynical/important, I get it. I'm not impressed.
Must be nice to not really do much than open doors and collect commissions. Do these people do any actual work?
John Gomes is handsome. His skin is so olive-y. :) But I get the feeling he deals with stuff beyond a lot of people's budgets.
SNAFU, I have a sneaking suspicion that you have rather lovely karma in life. :)

nygrl, perhaps you are right. I have recommended this guy to everyone.
I can sort of understand why they would be reluctant to tell you the prices if you were not the renter. The Real Estate market is rather cut throat and there are a lot of agents out there trying to push the same properties (or ones very similar). They have no idea if you are legit or not.
