My audition for NYU Tisch is this coming Tuesday at NYU. I will be performing two monologues, one from Talk Radio and one from A Company of Wayward Saints and 16 bars each of two songs: "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime and "Always True to You in My Fashion" from Kiss Me Kate. If you have any last-minute words of wisdom and advice, please feel free to go ahead and tell me...regarding the performance, interview...or any part of the audition. Thank you!

Also, if anybody else is, perchance, auditioning in the November 21, 2:00 pm block, tell me! =]

Break a leg!

i said this on another thread, but i'll say it again here...GO TO THE AUDITION COMPLETELY WARMED UP!! i know this should be a no-brainer, but they say in their audition info that you will be given time to warm up, so i thought "i'll warm up most of the way now and a little while i'm there to calm my nerves". WRONG.

if you're one of the first people called (i was the second) you will have NO TIME to warm up. if you aren't and you want to warm up, you will have to do it in a room filled with parents, the people staffing that day, and other kids who are auditioning, so depending on your personality it could be a little uncomfortable.

also, don't assume you'll be singing for someone from CAP21. when i was there (a few years ago) there was a woman from ETW, a set designer, and ONE GUY from CAP. they WILL ask what your alternate studio choices are, so read up on the other studios before you get there. i say absolutely pick one, because even if you only want MT, who knows...you might end up with no acceptances except to your second choice studio at NYU, and trust me, you'll be happy when you have that one even if you wanted MT originally. What's the worst that can happen? they offer you another studio and you say no? no problem, right?

that's all the advice i have, besides that, break a leg!

While this is true for regular decision, I would have to say for early (which is what I'm assuming lovely is going for becasue his audition date is now), if you only want MT, then by all means tell them CAP only. Because if you get in but not to CAP, you have to go.

But break a leg!! A couple of my friends who have auditioned already said that it was really laid back and everyone was really nice.

Thank you guys for your well-wishing!! And, yes, I've thought about the possibility that I would get into NYU and not into Tisch...or not get into CAP21. So I've decided to tell them that I DO have a second choice studio. I figure that, if I get into a different studio at Tisch, I can audition after two years to be in CAP21 as my advanced studio. And then, you may say, what if THAT doesn't work out? Well, life is full of iffy situations, so I think I'll just dive in and hope that everything works out for the best. Sporti, thank you for the advice about warming up, because I kind of assumed they had a room or something where you could warm up. Hmmm...hotel people, you'll have to deal with me Tuesday morning. Boy, do I feel badly for the people next to, above, and below us at the hotel. =]

Thanks again for your advice and encouragement!!

also, lovely, you'll either be accepted to Tisch, or you'll not accepted to NYU all....meaning that you CANNOT be accepted "generally". you'll either be accepted to the program you apply to, or you'll be denied.

that's just the way NYU works.

Sporti, that's comforting. Because I wasn't quite positive...

And, jaesdare, of course you may be blunt. I decided to sing it because I heard somebody singing it, thought it was a beautiful song, sang it myself at a showcase, did well with it, looked at my other options...and decided that I liked this one the best. If anybody at the audition asks me why I sang a song I can't possibly sing in the show in real life, I'll tell them that I chose it to showcase my vocal ability...or something like that. Whether or not the song's overdone, I haven't a clue, and I can't do anything to change it now. But, I'm curious, why not do YDS?

I'm not jaesdare, but I imagine her question about the song was due to the fact that when choosing your audition material, it's almost always best to choose monologues and songs which are from roles which you could perform in their respective shows. It is generally thought to be a bad idea for a blonde Caucasian to choose a song that is famously sung by Audra McDonald or Heather Headley, for instance, particularly for Tisch, where the auditors have, almost certainly, heard and seen the originals.

sporti is correct. You are either accepted or denied at Tisch, there is no situation where you are admitted just to NYU but not to Tisch, and there is no deferral. You have to be accepted both academically and artistically to get into Tisch. Each part is equally weighted.

Just curious, what is your second studio choice? Best of luck.

Does anyone know if there is an option to simultaneously apply A&S and Tisch at the same time? So for instance if you were not admitted due to the artistic component or even a 100% sure you would even want to be a part of a program like that you could easily transfer to A&S?

Marlene, no, you can't do that. NYU only allows you to apply to one of its colleges. If you don't get in, you have to wait an entire year before applying again.

Yeah, I figured jaesdare was referring to the race issue. I fully recognized that before I chose the song, but I thought it best showed my vocal ability. So, I chose it. I suppose it may have been stubborn of me. Oh well. There isn't a thing I can do to change it before my audition on Tuesday!

Erinrebecca, my second choice is either the Experimental Theatre Wing or the Meisner Extension. I'll decide upon one before my interview. Knowing me, I could decide upon a totally different one before the audition, but those are the two which are most appealing to me besides CAP21.

Again, thank you all for your advice and knowledge!
And, when I come back home, I'll tell you how the audition went!

Thanks!

I think I did fairly well. And my auditioner didn't ask anything about my song choice, thank goodness. My nerves probably would have made me a bit strange with that answer. Although, now that I think of it, I really wasn't very nervous. I was calm compared to the others, I think.

Softershade, yes I do represent District 11!! =]

I love District 11 people! =]
What school? I'm sure I'll see you perform at one-acts next weekend...unless of course you're performing in the first or third slot after lunch on Saturday. Because we're performing during the second slot after lunch on Saturday...and I'm timing all the other shows!

And, since the thread was pulled up anyway...in case you haven't read it somewhere else already, I didn't get in.

Oh well!
