Can someone recommend a decent hotel, not too expensive, clean and very close to Madison Square Garden? I did look into the Hotel Pennsylvania but several people told me that it is not very clean and to stay elsewhere.
I tried the search feature on this website and found most of the discussions were for hotels in the Times Square area.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

The Hotel Penn isn't all that bad, I stayed there a few years ago and it was perfect for what we needed, just a place to sleep at night. I think it just depends on the rooms, some are nicer than others, we lucked out and got a nice room...
You might look into the Herald Square, it's between 5 and 6th of 33rd I think...it's small, but it's nice, I've never had any complaints with that hotel.

We visited friends who stayed at the New Yorker
It looks like the moonies still have it. The lobby has been refurbished & ain't bad. The room looked like a prison cell. With the bed in there, there was hardly room to move. Their is a small howard Johnsons hotel on 34 between 7 & 8

Posted: 4/5/06 at 1:00amAgree about the rooms at the New Yorker. The lobby looks great, but wait until you get out of the elevator. The halls are poorly lit, the wallpaper dirty, the carpet threadbare, and the rooms AWFUL. Ramada should be ashamed to have their name on that dump. I recommend STAY AWAY.

I advise you to check out The Herald Square Hotel as well. It is where I stay when I vacation in NYC.The room are Clean, the service is great, they have free wi-fi internet access throughout the building, and the prices are fantastic for NYC($69-$229 a night). It is also a straight shot 3 blocks down to MSG on 31st Street.
