#1Need Sarah Palin joke help...

I'm in a talented writing course and our current assignment is to write about an "unlikely encounter". I decided to (yes it's corny) make it about myself walking down the yellow brick road to Oz when I run into Sarah Palin. I wanted to draw in Russia and I came up with the idea of the last line being Sarah saying "look, there, over the rainbow, it's Russia!"
Anyway, that's the only line I can think of and I have not been keeping up with Sarah that much so I was hoping you guys could just throw out I few things I could use to, I don't want to say pick at Sarah, but to make my piece funnier.
Thanks in advance.

If you are in a "talented writing course" you should be talented enough to write your own piece. Read up on Palin, watch video clips and come up with your own stuff. It's troubling that you'd have no qualms about taking credit for someone else's words.

Uh-oh... people don't usually take too kindly to doing other people's homework around here...
Edit: Blueroses beat me to the punch. (See what I mean?)

Posted: 10/21/08 at 6:42pmI'm not asking for someone to write an assignment, I'm just asking if there is any thing in general that Sarah has done that would make a good joke.

Lots of stuff. Google it. Wikipedia it.
I don't mean to be rude, but why would you choose to write a joke on Sarah Palin if you don't know anything about her? Wouldn't it be easier to write on a subject you do know about?

Posted: 10/21/08 at 7:02pmThe subject itself is something I'm having some trouble with, I'm much better with poetry(that's what got me in the course). I just got this idea in my head and wanted to see where I could take it, seems not so far.

Posted: 10/21/08 at 7:03pmYeah -- you need to do your own work here -- write what you know. If you don't know Sarah Palin well enough to write about her, then don't.

It's tough to write about something you don't know a lot about though -- especially humourous pieces. It might be best to take a second an brainstorm other unlikely encounters (aliens? John Wayne? Winnie the Pooh? John Wayne meeting aliens who look oddly like Winnie the Pooh?
).
I say have fun with it and don't over-think it... there's a lot of places you can go with it that have nothing to do with current events.

Wishing-- maybe one reason why you're having some trouble in the class is that you might be trying some subject matter that's a bit too ambitious. Your teacher's probably told you it's best to write about what you know, and even though that's a cliche, it helps. The topic is an 'unlikely encounter,' and I bet there are a million Broadway-related encounters you could write about really well.
Also... the Sarah Palin idea... well, I'm not sure how well that'd go over. Just because she's an easy target doesn't mean everything making fun of her automatically ends up funny.

Posted: 10/21/08 at 7:35pmI think it's better punchline if Sarah Palin is in Oz looking for a brain.

"I'm in a talented writing course"
What exactly makes a course talented?

papalovesmambo, I'm pretty sure I said I'm not good at this and poetry is my stronger point.

I wish someone had told this to Stephenie Meyer.
Why didn't she come on this message board asking for help?

Posted: 10/21/08 at 8:51pmActually, given the obvious self-insert in Twilight, I have a feeling that SMeyer WAS writing what she knew about... after all, doesn't Bella Swan always have a weird sense of superiority despite having no discernable talent at all? Sounds like Stephenie Meyer to me...

Posted: 10/21/08 at 8:54pmI was referring to her descriptions of the Olympic Peninsula, a place she obviously never visited before writing the book. But otherwise... you have a point.

It's nice to meet another human being who doesn't love Twilight! All of my friends are obsessed to the point that they're already picking out their costumes for when they go see the movie... I know a girl who's dating a guy simply because his name is Edward.

Well then, dear, why don't you write a humorous villanelle or a sestina about Governor Palin? Which do you think lends itself better to a comic point of view? Or do you prefer a simple Shakespearean sonnet?
I'm sure we'd all like to see you exercise your strong point, wouldn't we, Blueroses? Wouldn't we, Tazber?
How about just a dirty limerick? That would be much easier.
Or even a haiku.

Would love too, but that's not the assignment. I have to write a dialouge about and unlikely encounter. I'm gonna think about it.
Thanks for the nice responses.
