Alright, I know this may have been asked in the past, but I have a question and I cant exactly find the answer Im looking for anywhere... I know a lot of us have iPods, so I thought maybe one of you might know.

I'm currently living with my aunt and uncle so I dont have access to my own computer (where my itunes with all *my* music is). All I have here is the iPod, my cable and a whole bunch of music I want to put on my iPod without losing everything else.

I know you can turn the iPod into an external hard drive but all the instructions I've found say it needs to be done from the initial iTunes on the initial computer. So what I need to know is if it's at all possible to do this without being able to get to that computer? *Is* there a way to do it from the computer I'm on here?

Any information is greatly appreciated!!! Need iPod help asap

Thanks!

If you have the iPod disk then I think you can. Install iTunes and authorize that pc to play your music. It should work. Good luck sweetie!

When I hook my iPod up though, wont I lose all the music already on it?

Why turn it into an extrenal hard drive? If you just want to get the music on, that's not necessary as far as I know. I think if you just go to the iPod tab of Preferences and say you want to manually manage your songs and playlists, you should be able to plug in your iPod and transfer the songs from that computer's hard drive to the iPod. And that way you won't lose anything.

I'm assuming that "my cable" is a Firewire or USB cable and the computer in question has the proper port, of course.

Go to advanced settings or something like that and set it up so that it won't automatically update your iPod from your library.
If you can't find that option don't do it. You could lose your files!

Ooooooooooooooooh okay, I see what you're saying now. And yes, I meant my usb cable. Nice of me to omit 'usb' lol

So all I have to do is download iTunes on this computer and then set it up so that I just add the music manually? I shall check that out.

Thanks for the help -- I appreciate it!

I bringing this thread back because Ive finally tried to do this....

I found the 'share my music' option, but I didnt find any of the other options you all were talking about.

Is there someone here who's actually done this and can IM me and talk me through this?

Alright, I found the tutorial on how to do this.... however, I need to have access to my original computer. If I had access to my original computer I wouldnt need to do this.... So now what do I do?
