I just started a new drug called Symilin for diabetics. It lowers blood sugar considerably as well as causing weight loss. It is injectable just like insulin. It lowers insulin resistance which automatically lowers blood sugars. Also, some diabetics have a tendency to have their stomachs empty rapidly so they are always hungry. This slows down the transit time of food in the digestive tract causing you to feel fuller quicker on much less food. My doctor says it is the next best invention since insulin in the 1920's.
glad you found something that works

Thanks for the bump, Abba
Is this medicine for short term use, or can someone remain on it indefinitely?

My uncle and my boyfriend are both diabetic. I'll have to pass this news along to them, if they don't know already.

Sueleen, For me it has been nausea, but that will pass. I took it a few months ago for 6 weeks ,s o I know. I had to go off it because the drug companies didn't produce enough of it to get samples. My insurance didn't cover it at the time, but they do now. Low blood sugar can be a problem if oine doesn't test often enough.

Lucille and Leo, this should be prescribed by an endocrinoligist rather than an internist or GP.
Is it intended for short term or long term use? And do you, by any chance have a link to online info? I search on it a few weeks ago but didn't find much.

Amylin Labs who makes the drug. I think it is not for long term, but you need to discuss that with an endocrinologist. I am taking it to lose enough weight to safely have a gastric bypass.
I coul;dnt get the link to copy. Just look under Amylin.
