New Years Eve in New York

I'm visiting New York over New Years Eve and I have absolutely no idea what there is to do. My singing teacher, who's from New York, told me to stay away from Times Square because of all the crowds, so I pretty much have no idea what there is to do.
Any tips will be greatly appreciated.
Concerts, performances, restaurants, anything really!

I'm also hoping to get tickets for a matinée show, but I'm not sure which one. I'm hoping to see ALNM, In the Heights, Promises Promises, Addams Family, WSS, Next to Normal and Spider-Man while I'm there.

There aren't many shows playing on New Year's Eve. Try Lincoln Center or Off Bwy.

I do believe that DRIVING MISS DAISY has a 2 o'clock matinee on the 31st.

BTW: The theatre district is pretty much in Times Square.
