i am auditioning for a gilbert and sullivan show,'the mikado'.

WHAT on earth do i sing? The usual? I know this is very traditional musical theatre so i don't want to do something modern. I don't need song suggestions, just genre suggestions..although...if you have some song suggestions i am more than open to them :) thanks in advance guys!

I"ve always liked Poor Wandring One from Pirates of Penzance, if you want to stay in the G & S vein. Mabel has some great parts in that song.

It's always a good choice to do something else that the same composer wrote. Or maybe something R&Hy.

Keep in mind that Gilbert and Sullivan is beyond legit musical theatre. The Mikado, Pirates..., HMS Pinafore, etc. are operettas. So, unless you know a lot of operettas, I'd stick with something G & S. If you are doing a song from a musical, though, and assuming that you're a soprano, I'd go less with Rogers and Hammerstein, and more with something like 3 Penny Opera or Sweeny Todd (Greenfinch...).

i think "green finch" would actually be a really good choice in terms of finding something comparable to G&S.

it carries the same classical feel (i feel it almost as if it were an art song), but is still in the musical theatre vein.

pndmnd is definitely right - G&S is far past musical theatre into operetta, but i think if you have to audition with a musical theatre piece that "green finch" would work really well.

yeah thats the thing, i'm SO used to singing 'musical theatre' i've had absolutely NO opera/classical voice training at all!

The songs i've been listening to are all...well...VERY...unlike anything i would sing- maybe i should go with R&H; its not quite like g&s but its around the same era, no?

if you do want to try some other operetta composers try Sigmund Romberg or Victor Herbert. You could also possibly sing some Jerome Kern. Good luck-The Mikado is great! I did it last year!!!!!!!
