Obama Goes Off The Road

In a really boneheaded move (amongst many), he has slapped a tariff on the Chinese Government for oversize & fat tires

Not to bright ticking off the biggest purchaser of US debt. All they have to do is retaliate & not buy anymore & Obamas big spending stops dead in its tracks & the recession will look like a tea party if no one buys our debt anymore. We may than have to, dare I say it, live within our means or tax the living crap out of everyone. Wonder which road Obama would take

I remember Clinton gave the Chinese a pass on Human Rights violations. We talk about going green & yet 60 Minutes did a piece last week about how we ship computers there to be destroyed & how a vast section of land in that area is polluted & Chinese are dying because of unscrupulous businessmen there.

They are also a large consumer of US goods. They also import a ton to us so they do play a hugh part in US economic policy. To deny it would be naive.

I am not saying denying the very large role China plays in our economy. I am just saying if Obama did what you suggested, others would be calling him weak.

Right now, China's biggest concern is keeping our economy stable and ending the worldwide recession - it is not in their best interest to force our economy to collapse, because of the impact on what manufacturing that is still going on, as well as the value of other investments. China cannot afford a trade war with the US for the very reason that they are so entwined with our economy. If and when US consumer demand resurfaces, China wants to be front and center, ready to supply it.

BTW - you can thank Reagan and Bush for this predicament.

EDIT: Goth, I would say China influences US economic policy, but it does not dictate it per se.

You forgot to add one rather important word in that paragraph, Roxy.

ILLEGALLY

The 60 Minutes piece was about the ILLEGAL shipment of E-waste, to China and the US businessmen who are profiting from it. Which is against both US and Chinese law.

You know all those rollovers SUVs have that so many almost automatically attribute to the drivers? Some of them were due to faulty imported Chinese tires. Most tires imported from China are for SUVs and light trucks. About four years ago one of the largest imported manufacturers unilaterally decided to stop including a standard safety feature in their tires. As a result their tires experienced premature tread separation, causing a number of rollover accidents. The US ordered the tires recalled but the Chinese company was uncooperative about providing information regarding its US sales. These tires were even used on ambulances and similar first response vehicles.

If they want to sell here they need to start playing by the same rules required of US manufacturers.

And let's not forget pet food.
